It was a freezing cold day, so it was nice that there was plenty of room for us all to park right in front of the restaurant. Entering, the restaurant is bright, airy, very clean and nicely decorated. The menu is up on the wall, but, fortunately, they do have menus to peruse at the table.
The food came out quickly. All four entrees were served in recyclable bowls. Two of us had the Steak Bacon Blue Salad, one had the Teriyaki Salmon Rice Bowl and one had the Cowgirl Rice Bowl. I usually take photos of my food, but we all dived in so fast I forgot. Everything was fresh and delicious! Only one of us had leftovers to take home.
We took advantage of the canned drinks on display although I would like to come back and try a smoothie. I noticed that a few mothers came in with little ones for smoothie treats.
There were several occupied tables while we were there but we had no trouble hearing each other. This is nice as so many restaurants seem to be incredibly noisy these days.
The rest room at the rear is dramatically decorated and, again, very clean. Once back in that area, you find yourself in a cute boutique which gave us a few more minutes of visiting time after we finished our meals.
We actually liked not having wait staff. We talked for a long time before going to the counter to order with no one stopping at the table to ask if we were ready to order yet. We didn’t have our conversation interrupted by a waitress/waiter asking questions, taking dishes, etc. However, it would have been nice if someone had stopped just one time after we began eating to ask us if the food was okay and if we needed anything.
Just two other suggestions that come to mind is perhaps a higher-quality full-size plastic fork and one of my friends mentioned that on such a cold day it would have been nice to see a couple of soup options on the menu.
Salty Girl is a hidden gem in East Rochester’s Piano Works Mall and, I will definitely be suggesting it as a lunch option whenever friends want to get together.
Prices are not cheap, but in my view very reasonable for amount and quality of ingredients, $17 for a bowl of high quality food vs you can almost spend that at McDonald’s and feel awful about your decision. Will certainly be back and hope this place thrives.
Prices are above average, which set my expectations a bit higher. I ordered the salmon but was underwhelmed. The fish was burned on one side—almost black—and the rice was cold, dry, and clumpy, as if it had been refrigerated.
Overall, the experience was okay, but it could be much better for the price. I’m also not a fan of being served in cardboard boxes or bowls when dining in. Since this isn’t a fast-food restaurant, I expected proper tableware.
There’s definitely room for improvement, especially if the goal is to attract customers willing to spend around $20 for lunch.
