Reviews
Note on my rating scale: Sharing this for transparency, as I recognize that a 3-star review may be misinterpreted as reflecting a mediocre experience.
5 stars – Exceptional: Outstanding food, service, and/or overall experience. Truly worth going out of your way for. (For example, we frequently make the drive from San Antonio to Austin just for Uchi.)
4 stars – Very Good: Exceeds expectations in quality, service, or ambiance.
3 stars – Good: A solid experience that meets expectations. I consider any place with 3 stars or above worthy of a return visit.
2 stars – Disappointing: Falls short in food quality or service.
1 star – Poor: Not recommended
The portions are generous — we’re happily taking home enough leftovers to enjoy another great meal tomorrow. We tried several dishes, but a few stood out as clear favorites: the Pineapple Shrimp Balls were unique and delicious, the Kung Pao chicken lettuce wraps had just the right kick, the lettuce wraps were crisp and flavorful, and the Dan Dan noodles were perfectly seasoned and satisfying.
Everything about our experience was top-notch — quality ingredients, great service, and an inviting atmosphere. We’ll definitely be back soon!
A few notes of the dishes we’ve tried:
The Plum Tomatoes with clearly well planned flavors.
The fish blossom, a dish traditionally not prepared with tilapia. This place did it with tilapia, and almost pulled it off to his the inherent unfavorable flavor of tilapia. You’ll find it if careful
Eat this last if you get this dish. Its strong flavors likely overwhelm other dishes.
The cumin beef is well done. Tender beef with just the right level of spices. Strong and flavorful. Equally good is their farmers pork.
The pork ribs is also very good, a nice spin on the traditional sweet and sour pork ribs. Good balance of flavors without being over powered by the sweet and sour or salt.
Also tried their beef and lobster pasta today. A solid entry catering to the more Western pallets. Lobster is impressively prepared, avoided the common pitfalls. The beef is done with salt and pepper with mushrooms and onions. A little bland, especially if you had the fish blossom on the same meal. The pasta is buttery and soft.
Avoid the shumai at this place. Shumai in name only and disappointing in every way. Fails standard shumai of both northern and southern styles, both in wrapping and stuffing.
The hot & spicy wings had a strong flavor but were not overly spicy. The meat was juicy and well crisped. The garlic bok choy and chow mein were also solid. The xiao long bao was just okay. I tried the beef and lobster pasta special and the lobster and it was great to try! The lobster was pretty good and went well with the pasta sauce!
There is street parking and also retail parking in the building.
The food was nothing short of spectacular. The beef tongue was melt-in-your-mouth tender and packed with flavor. The beef stir-fry was a classic done to perfection—savory, with a great wok hei (that smoky stir-fry taste). The rich, delicate lobster paired beautifully with the pasta.
The service was attentive and knowledgeable without being intrusive, making the entire evening feel special. I cannot recommend this place highly enough and will definitely be back to explore more of the menu!
We also got the balsamic pork rib with fried rice mochi. This was delicious, the mochi and the rib were both cooked well. Only complaint is that it was too sweet.
