Ehh. Let’s just say not up to my standards. The beans were watery. The brisket. Hm. Well I suggest u have a big ol jug o water rtg or float it in the BBQ sauce. It is D-RYE. I liked to choke to death tryna swallow it. It’s one o the joints with meat so dry u MUST have BBQ sauce just to get it down. The meat prep is clearly focused on quantity over quality. And that’s how it tastes: rushed n mass-produced.
The service was great, the atmosphere nice n clean. But the food eh. Pulled pork wasn’t any better n came with a giant piece o cartilage in the middle. Yeah that brisket was nearer to jerky. Very difficult to chew. And had 0 zero seasoning, bland, tasteless. No bark at all. I didn’t see a speck o pepper anywhere. Even the poor corn ears were sooo overcooked they were that sad leeched out yella with a waxy hominy consistency. Nahhhh

Great brisket and blackberry cobbler.Atmosphere is basic barbecue joint but it’s the barbecue that is important, so that ranks much higher.

This place changed hands with new proprietor and now has great BBQ. Often we’ll preface that with “for Ava” but this is good Q anywhere. Friday lunchtime had brisket sliced perfectly thin with great smoke ring. Smoked sausage just right and juicy. Even beans were good. Wife liked pulled pork sandwich and green beans. Food temp was just right and very fast service.
I had written this BBQ place off a decade ago but friend recommended it after it changed hands. They were sure right.

My wife & I have eaten at Backroads BBQ a few times while passing through Ava. Food is always good. I tried the sausage links yesterday and was really impressed! Highly recommended.

Not bad. The polish sausage and hot links were really good. We happened to get fresh brisket. It was tasty. The turkey was a bit dry. And was smoked unevenly i.m.o. the pulled pork had little to no smoke. But the brine used made meat moist and salty. The sauce on the table was my kind of sauce. I would describe it near sweet baby rays. But better! We randomly chose this as it was on the way. Sweet tea was strong and sweet. Could have used more ice. The servers were nice. Styrofoam cups and plastic ware made the dining experience clunky.

Best barbecue around. Smoke, meat, service and price. Everything is perfect. If they have it, try the cobbler. Smoked turkey, and brisket are the best!

Yummy, yummy! Ribs fall right off the bone. The baked potatoes are huge. Pluscon Thursdays they do a huge chunk of meatloaf with 2 sides and galic bread. I’m not a meatloaf person but this is good! You can call ahead and do takevout too. They have so many take out orders. They pack it well too

Very disappointing. As soon as I walked in the doors, I knew it wasn’t going to be great. Which is a shame because the reviews and people I talked to said it was one of the best places in town. To me it Felt like eating in a barn. stall no restrooms as far as I could tell. No sign stating whether it was seat yourself or wait to be seated so I stood there like an idiot for a few minutes waiting for a waitress before just grabbing a table on my own. my two year-old daughter and I sat there for almost 7 minutes before I had to ask if they were still open so I could have a menu. they said they had kids cups and then brought me an adult cup with a lid which my kid immediately spilled( no staff came or offered to help with the mess). The brisket was cold when it came to me and for a $20 plate, I sure didn’t expect to get a single mushy overcooked corn(on the cob) and a condiment sized helping of potato salad (which was definitely GFS or Walmart prepackaged) as my sides which was an upgrade for $4 more , I upgraded to have a bigger plate and I left hungry and so did my daughter after eating it all and wanting more. No Silverware – all plastic ware with no knives, cheap paper towel napkins, bbq sauce tasted like it was left in the sun all day with the cap off. While I was there someone stole out of the tip jar and ran out. I really hope this was a one off experience and they can get some real silverware and decor and fresh food but I will not be returning or recommending.

Great brisket and ribs. We will make this a regular stop when we come to Ava, Missouri.
