Mediocre food with a few major downsides that are easily fixable to make the food here much more acceptable. The French onion soup was decent, but the bread and butter served was inedible. The bread was bland and the butter “spread” tasted like some sort of vegetable oil blend and was also spoiled. The prime rib had some bites of funk to it around the edges and the ajus was clearly made from a powder packet that tasted old and dirty. The meat itself was tender, but underseasoned. The tin pack of potatoes was fairly gross with undercooked potatoes, undercooked onions and 2 almost raw pieces of bacon laying over it all to top it off. I mistakenly ordered a piece of cheesecake to go, which was gritty with a crust that likely had been made with the spoiled vegetable spread. The serivce and atmosphere was very nice. I hate to leave bad reviews, but if you’re looking for a nice meal I’d probably skip this place unless they make some basic common sense changes to their food preparation.

We were driving through town and saw this interesting place as a dinner option and we were so happy we stopped!

The atmosphere is pretty interesting with plenty of great cowboy items decorating just about everything, but isn’t overwhelming. The lighting is a bit dark, which makes for a nice experience.

The food is amazing and the steaks were top notch and this is one of the best meals we’ve had while traveling the country. The confetti cheese cake made for a perfect ending. If we are ever in the area again, we will be sure to stop in!

Went to Mad Mary’s last night from a recommendation when I said I was looking for protein and vegetables. I was traveling for work and alone, so I bellied up to the bar.

However, after seeing their menu and hearing their soups, I couldn’t help but order French onion soup, steak and herb linguine. Not only was the steak perfectly cooked and seasoned and the rest of the food delightful, but so were all of the staff.

Everyone was helpful, had a good sense of humor and appeared to like being there.

Mad Mary’s is one of those places in Pierre where you go thinking, “We’ll just grab dinner,” and you leave thinking, *“Okay… that was actually really good.”
The steaks are consistently solid — cooked the way you ask, seasoned right, and clearly handled by people who know their way around beef (which feels appropriate for South Dakota). No unnecessary fuss, just a steak that does what a steak is supposed to do.
The sides pull their weight, the drinks are poured like they understand winter in Pierre. It’s the kind of place that works just as well for a casual night out as it does when relatives come to town and you want to say, “Yeah, this is one of our good spots.”
The staff is friendly, efficient, and easygoing — very “Pierre nice” without being overbearing. You’re taken care of, but not hovered over, which is exactly how it should be.

Who would have thought such an interesting and delicious establishment would be found in Pierre,SD? Had a special drink made with Tito’s along with prime rib. Steak was cooked medium and was soo tender.. . Delicious! Service was nice and attentive and vibe was old school.

Update: 8/2025.. came back and tried the Peach Cobbler turtle cheesecake and the cod… The cod was ehh ok. The cheesecake, however, whoa!..puts some of the NY style ones from actual NY to shame.

Went to this steak house in Pierre with a group of 8 (3 of which were children). The prices were outrageous for what you received. The food was average. They charge a 18% SERVICE CHARGE. I believe in tipping as to the food and service but not ahead of time. I will never eat there again nor will I ever recommend it as a place to go. The only nice thing to say is the waitress was quite friendly.

The atmosphere and food were amazing, and the staff was super friendly. The old country music playing in the “saloon” atmosphere was just the icing on the cake. It was a true place of Americana, and I can’t wait to go back!

One of the best Prime Ribs I’ve had. Server made the night. We had a long, hard day and came in late. She made us feel welcome and took care of every detail.
