Had we checked Yelp first, we may not have given them a shot. Worth noting, a lot of the 1-star reviews seem to be when the place was under different ownership. We concur about the salsa being a miss but disagree with the vast majority of the negative comments.
Drove past a place that was full of vacation people to get there. We were really glad to see a parking lot that wasn’t stuffed full of plenty of cars. No overflow parking meant no issues getting in and out in a reasonable amount of time.
I ordered the Alambre. Basically fajitas with cheese. Available with chicken or steak, I chose the steak. What I was served was pretty dang delicious! I enjoyed the big pile of peppers and onions that was mixed in with the steak (and a little bacon – everything is better with bacon!) and ate a little with knife and fork before filling and enjoying 3 flour tortillas full. Not a small portion!
Wife had their mole. Made in-house and better than my dinner.
Had a great visit with the super-sweet owner. Can’t wait to try their house tequila on the next visit. Apparently, they buy by the cask and have it bottled for them.
We live about a half-hour north and don’t get to Chetek very often but will definitely be back!
Of note: we visit some of the parts of Mexico not seen in airline commercials. While the salsa is Americanized to the point of being nearly bland, the mole was authentic and proper! If we were served that dish in Oaxaca it would not be surprising. Being served that dish in Chetek, Wisconsin…very surprising! Nicely done, folks!
As far as the outside, the entrance doesn’t scream “eat here”, but you will regret not trying the food. I speak this based on only the entryway. Outside on the patio has perfect spot for eating while enjoying a phenomenal view of the lake of course on a much warmer day.
After going in the sign was a bit confusing stating to see the bartender if there isn’t a hostess ready and we were about to head that direction a lady came and helped us. Our waitress gets a 10/10. We arrived before the dinner rush and received top notch service. Our waitress was making sure we were happy with our food choices, had great suggestions and made an effort to make sure we had what we needed without being over bearing.
Is it just me or do they usually pop over to the table right after you take a bite of food? Not ours!! must have wanted to hear our honest opinion. We also had another waiter stop over and ask how the food was.
Now, on to the food…. Make sure to read the surprising end!
Our drinks came fast and tasted wonderful. My husband ordered the most delicious Mango Margarita while I ordered water, I know cliché, and coffee.
The chips, salsa and queso were delish. The only downfall for me is when I asked for spicier salsa, they had a jalapeño purée, which wasn’t that spicy and wasn’t at all salsa. I however like quite a bit more spice than that.
The fajitas were amazing.
I order the taquitos and they are the best I’ve had! The plate display was great and the taste was top-notch.
We ended with fried ice cream. My husband collaborated with our waitress to have her put my wedding ring in the ice cream. I am already married but on kid five, with all the swelling I wasn’t able to wear my ring. It was adorable! The fried ice cream was to-die-for and the display made me believe they have a five star culinary chef in the kitchen.
The price was reasonable for the amount of food.
I will end with… if you’ve made it this far, the food was absolutely incredible and you won’t regret it.
