BEST Mex in the Northern OBX! I’ve eaten here for six years since I am a local, and this place has never disappointed. The food is exceptional, the waiters are exceptional, and the prices cannot be beat. Our favorites include the enchiladas rancheros, the fajita taco salad, the Carnitas, and the sizzling fajita platter. The waiters have been with this restaurant for at least six years and are super accommodating and very sweet and kind. Love, love, love, try it try it try it!!!

Had a wonderful dinner at El Potrillo! The food was absolutely fantastic… fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. Our waiter, Yuri, made the experience even better. He was excellent, very attentive, and genuinely engaging, which made the evening feel welcoming and relaxed. Great food, great service, and a great atmosphere. We’ll definitely be back! Oh and by the way, Nancy makes the best margaritas!

Service is exceptional. Beautiful decor. Food arrives super fast. Great find when you are hungry and want something quick. They were able to make my dish without any rice or cheese. The only thing is the veggies were not fresh. They looked like a frozen veggie medley. A little disappointing, hence the 4 stars for food.

The service is good many times when they remember to get things right. Some of the servers go above & beyond, while some could care less if you are there are not. My last order was wrong. I ordered a fiesta salad to go with no lettuce & no beef, but with everything else. There were 0 onions in the dish. The onions are an imperative ingredient to flavor the dish. It tasted awful. I was already home by the time I opened it, so was too late to do anything about it. Because of the language barrier, no one there speaks or understand english very well. I would never call on the phone, that would be suicide on my part. Unfortunately, this is a problem that happens too often at this location. Not sure where the problem lies. But the kitchen only gets about 50% of my orders correct, and I always place them in person. I order the guacamole fresco regularly there, unfortunately, it tastes different almost every time. I wish you all would teach your kitchen staff how to cook things correctly and the same EVERY TIME. So frustrating to pay for food that tastes bad!

El Portillo is our new favorite Mexican restaurant!!! We just moved to the area and love Mexican food. We stop here once a week and try something different each time. They do not disappoint. The meals are tasty, the staff is great and the decor is very festive. Highly recommend if you are passing through, live on the beach or live on the mainland! ¡Muchos Gracias!

First I’ll start by saying i dont know how much the drinks were, seeing as my boyfriend didn’t let me see the bill. They were delicious though! The food was very good and the service was great! It was our first visit here and I will definitely go back. We were seated in a booth, however, they had a nice looking bar as well. They close at 10pm on the night we went, which was a Friday. I really had a good “first” date at this restaurant. Lol Also, I will add that the restroom was clean which is always a plus. One last thing that I thought was nice was the bench outside, seeing as I am a smoker on occasion. I really enjoyed my drinks and my meal at this local establishment. As always, I’m happy to support our local businesses. Thank you!
