Who knew that one of the best grouper sandwiches in town was at a college bar/restaurant? But it’s true and they have the local reviews and awards to back it up, not to mention the groper sandwiches.

We stopped here once before to try the highly acclaimed grouper sandwiches only to find out that they had a large event on campus that day and were completely out of grouper. Undaunted by this set back we returned this week and luckily they had grouper.

Aside from the traditional styles of Grouper sandwiches (blackened & grilled) they offer 4 unique styles, Crunchy Grouper, The Journalist, The Adventurer & The Greuben. I’ve had a bunch of the grilled & blackened version so I tried The Journalist.

The Journalist is Fresh Florida Grouper – served on a homemade rosemary roll with lettuce and tomato. The grouper is grilled and topped with mushrooms, onions and swiss cheese. Most hardcore groper fans would scoff at this combo since it masks the true flavor of the groper which is light flaky fish with a mild flavor. But what the heck, I’ve had tons of “regular” grouper sandwiches so why not try something completely different. It was awesome and the mushroom, onions & swiss cheese combo added a unique flavor.

They don’t offer sides with each sandwich so I added the potato salad and it was fresh and had great flavor.

My wife ordered the Greuben blackened, she also was very happy with her choice. She has ordered other versions of this before and really liked that the sandwich wasn’t overwhelmed with 1000 island dressing.

The service is self ordered from the counter and if you’re looking for a high end atmosphere this isn’t the place. Remember it’s located on the USF campus. But if you want a kick ass grouper sandwich and a good craft beer, you found the right place.

A community staple, the Tavern has been around for decades and should stay around. Great place for no frills eats and weekday social events like trivia and small shows. So much nostalgia from when I went to USF and still a great spot for students and anyone who wants a chill night. Known for their grouper sandwiches. Their burgers are okay, their fries absolutely delicious.

I recently tried out this local spot that had a 4.5-star rating and ordered their Grouben sandwich, a twist on the classic Reuben made with grouper. The sandwich was decent but didn’t particularly stand out, and the fries were just okay. The ordering process was a bit confusing, but once inside, the environment was casual. Overall, it’s a place I might revisit, but I’m not in a hurry to return.

This is a hidden gem! On Wednesdays they have open mic from 7 pm to 10 pm. So many talented acts! Each person normally plays 2 songs, so it’s a great variety of live music. Live music also Thursdays and Fridays. The food is also amazing!!! The burger and fries are to die for and the nachos is huge and tasty. Super casual and lay back atmosphere. And easy parking.

The Tavern at Bayboro is a must for any fans of grouper sandwiches. Their prices are relatively affordable and they always have something great for everyone. Some highlights include the grouper sandwiches (duh!) and one of my favorites, the Social Chair. Be warned, this place is packed at noon/peak lunchtime! But not to fear, they have plenty of outdoor seating.

Honestly not what I was expecting, but loved it nonetheless. We were waiting for a show to start and were looking for places to grab a bite a drinks prior. Looked on the map and found this little hidden gem. You walk in and order at the counter, grab a drink and pay. Definitely a locals place but I loved every minute of it. Live music was a plus. Cheese sticks were to die for

Fellow traveler you’re nearby you want to have a beer? This place will do. On the day we visited the food was okay. Same old crap Cisco corporate food served at most places. It’s bar grub here plain and simple. Place an order inside at the counter. Grab your beer. Go to a table. They’ll bring whatever you have to make for you to your table.
