New ownership and new chef has turned this restaurant around into something great. The chef has over 20 years of experience with Japanese and Korean food, and is an artisan with both Korean and Japanese style sushi dishes. Both the in restaurant service and even the take-out are presented wonderfully, with impeccable flavors.

Hopefully word will get out that will overcome the prior ownership’s terrible service and food, allowing the great chef to expand the restaurant into something more.

Under new management and everything is amazing!
We ordered the Bi Bim Bap, Shrimp shumai, and the Korean style sushi bowl for take out. The presentation simply for take out was impressive. Will definitely will be back to try everything. Thank you!

This is the third iteration of the Kaya restaurant. And it’s just brilliant. With over 20 years running a couple of sushi restaurants in Chicago the new owner has brought a new standard for sushi to southern Illinois. Sure you can get the standards you find most places but it’s the unique rolls both on and off menu that set Kaya above the rest. Anything envolving jalapeño pure, truffle oil and a blowtorch is worth your time.

The main entries on the menu are also exceedingly well done. Whether it’s the chicken cutlets or the udon soup with tempura vegetables and shrimp there’s something for everyone.

The small plates are amazing. Always a unique gourmet view sashimi pieces.

This time when the sign said new management they meant it.

The food is great, you can taste the love put into it. And they have an amazing selection of sushi. The portions are very generous and well priced. Staff is very friendly and welcoming. This little place is often overlooked, but I highly recommend it.

The best Korean Chef with the best meal. I ate there twice and I loved it. The Korean bibimbap is great. And Korean sashimi rice bowl is great! I recommend this place!

Sushi was terrible. Ordered a Philly roll and literally spit it out because the avocado was rotten. Chef brought the avocado he used to our table and tried to argue that it was fine. Ingredients were not fresh, and the place was dirty. The waitress was very nice though.

I use to love this place. However since new management has taken over I won’t probably be back. The wait staff all acted stoned and knew nothing about the menu. I ordered shrimp tempura, the menu said it also came with some tempura veggies, asked the waitress if this was right and she said yes. What I got was 3 shrimp, when I asked the waitress she went to the manager who then told me that it is as a “misprint” in the menu about the veggie tempura. The manager then took out a sharpie and marked out the veggie tempura listed with the shrimp tempura. The California roll I ordered had only rice and a round shape in common with a California roll.my steamed rice was dried out and in one massive lump. Add to this the face that two meals, two watersand an appetizer cost me $40. To make things more insulting I handed the waitress a $100 bill and she twice asked if I wanted my change back. Save yourself some money and disappointment and don’t go here.

My husband and I LOVE this place! We eat here almost every week! Best Japanese/Korean food in town and the prices are much better than Fuji. I highly recommend this place to all of my friends and family every chance I get. The staff is pretty awesome and always willing to make our experience good whether we are dining in or picking up our usual take out!

We go there almost once per week and love it!! Excellent, friendly service. My favorite dish is the veggie Pho with tofu. Their seaweed salad is awesome! They also have very nice jasmine tee with honey.

Sushi was terrible. Philly roll tasted off. Spicy tuna roll was rancid. The ridiculous roll tasted like the butane used to sear it. Wasted $40 bucks and will not return. Waitress was good though. Even though she forgot the utensils.
