I had a Doctor’s appointment at St Joseph Hospital, and afterwards my wife had a taste for fast food so we stopped here. To start off we were greeted very joyfully. I can’t remember the cashiers named but he was very friendly and out going on any and all questions about our order. We ordered a Gyro plate( it had enough meet and fries for 2). We ordered a regular Gyro as well, which 2 people could have eaten off of. To round it out we ordered a pizza puff and mozzarella sticks. Everything was Great. To top it off it was Friday and on Friday you get a chocolate chip cookie with each purchase. The price was about average for a fast food place.

Johnny’s Beef and Gyros make my favorite Italian beef sandwich in the city, and I’ve tried very many. The beef is fantastic, the sweet and spicy peppers are both great, I get them both on my sandwich. Online ordering is easy, and the staff is always pleasant and patient to deal with. There’s a clean bathroom that has always been stocked. This is one of maybe two restaurants that I always make sure to hit up when I visit, usually numerous times. I’ve never gotten anything else besides beef sandwich and the combo sandwich, so I can’t comment on any other food.

Born and raised on the south side, I’ve had a lot of Italian beefs and sadly this was very disappointing, especially for a place with great reviews. The beef lacked flavor and was more like a skinny beef. Don’t have to ever have it again. The arancini was amazing and fried to perfection. If only I could say the same for the beefs.

The guys at this shop are as kind and helpful as they come. There is a sign on the door that says it’s family owned. If you want some quintessential Chicago cuisine for lunch, and you are in the area, this is your spot. Food was phenomenal. Get the Italian beef. It’s like a Philly cheese steak but it has Italian peppers sprinkled on top.

As with most Metropolitan cities the Greeks came first, then the Italians and both lay claims to major influence in any cities cuisine, but being a true cold weather town there is a heartiness that is usually indicated by cheese on everything, they stay true to the first gen flavor roots and go with portions over empty calories.
It’s one of the best places to get top tier cultural flavors. The location is perfectly central, approachable, but authenticly local. Decor is as you’d think a beef shop in Chicago to be, service is a little more on the cheerful side due to the Greek influence. Prices are on par with dining in the area for quality Chicago.
My go to order is the Italian Combo with a gyro platter to snack on the sliced meat and fries. My 2nd fav order is the Big Daddy burger (tsaiziki and bbq on the side) and a Maxwell Street Polish giving you a bit of everything Chicago. Usually places evolve to the changing wants of the neighborhood, but they sell Greek and Italian equally well.
They have always done beef tallow, and it’s a shame they have to mention it becuase the rest of the world went away from that when they didn’t. Great fries, and a good amount per order. I have yet to try the salads, but it’s hard to wow people with them when it doesn’t say Salad’s in the name…
The beef is tender (gyro, roast beef, burger), well seasoned, rendered. The breads are toothsome, soft, crunchy, chewy. The sauces and condiments are crunchy, smooth, blended and balanced.
The pizza puff is another far less known Chicago staple for the picky eaters, they also have chicken tenders for the kids.
All in all it’s a 1st rate stop off for all things Beef and all things Chicago.

My family, and I were completely locked out of our vehicle near this place tonight. The gentleman at the counter was absolutely amazing, very kind to us. We truly appreciated not only the amazing meal we bought but also the establishment. Not often anymore you walk into a place and feel so welcomed immediately. We will most definitely be back!

Just visiting Chicago for a wedding and stopped by this place. However local and travelers please do not sleep on this place! Their Italian beef sandwich with half spicy and sweet peppers is a must! Their big daddy burger is a meat lovers wet dream! Please do not sleep and try this place! The atmosphere is nice and service is great! To my people’s in DC/MD/VA do not sleep on Chicago!
