Sea WhenAbsent
El Pope is one of those improbable Richmond gems: a true hole-in-the-wall that looks like absolutely nothing fancy inside (the booths feel like they haven’t been replaced in at least a decade) but the kitchen turns out food that’s flat-out delicious.

Start with the sopapillas stuffed with seafood. The crab and shrimp are nicely seared without being overcooked, and they’ve never had that “held too long” odor you sometimes catch with steam-table seafood. Obviously at $13 per sopapilla the shrimp and crab aren’t coming in live, but these cooks know how to work with frozen seafood and bring it back to life; the sauces and salsa are first-rate and do a lot of the heavy lifting.

El Pope also specializes in pupusas, and they do them in a bunch of combinations. As of this writing you can get three pupusas for $12, which is a great lunch deal. Ours came out fast and were perfectly crisped on both sides, with fillings that actually tasted like something instead of just melted cheese, which is exactly what you want from a Salvadoran spot.

Service is very hands-off and can be slow, but the chips and chunky fresh salsa they drop on the table soften the wait. This is a no-frills, family-run place that cares about flavor more than decor, and I’m grateful to have it not far from home.

Everything was very tasty, and the Jalepeno Peach Margarita was one of the best margaritas I’ve had in the area. Reasonably priced as well.

Came here with a group of 6 for lunch, mainly to try the pupusas (currently 3 for $12) because we had heard good things about them. I tried the beef, bean and cheese, the zucchini and cheese, and the shrimp and cheese. I have to go against the general opinion in the reviews and say that honestly, I couldn’t taste the difference between the zucchini pupusa and the shrimp pupusa! The cheese has little to no flavor, I could find only hints of shrimp in the shrimp and cheese, and barely tasted any zucchini in the zucchini and cheese. The beef, bean and cheese was bland, but I could recognize that there were both beef and beans in there. Most in the group agreed that the pupusas were not special enough to come back again for.

It was not crowded when we were there. In fact, I arrived first of the group and was the only patron in the place. The servers appeared to be mother and son, and service was slow, though courteous and earnest.

Parking in the area can be challenging, but it was fine at lunchtime on this weekday.

Cannot recommend El Pope enough. We have eaten here at least ten times by now. The shrimp appetizer is incredible. I have dreams about it! Excellent place to go if you are a large party. The staff is so incredibly kind and fun. Prices are very very fair and although sometimes the food can take a bit, it’s always worth the wait!

El Pope is delicious! I highly recommend the pupusas! I got the bean/cheese and zucchini/cheese and both were great. Lots of gluten free and vegetarian options. My husband got the chicken torta and said it was one of the best sandwiches he’s had. We will definitely be back to try more!!

Horrible experience. This is how much salad we got for 10 pupusas! And my burrito grande had rotten spinach on it. I threw up last night after i saw what i pulled out of my burrito. Half the spinach was completely brown. i wanted to take a picture but i was so grossed out, since id already eaten half, i couldnt even look at it. My family doesnt have much money to spend on going out to eat these days, so im really disappointed we chose this spot and they cared so little for our meal.

This is an awesome restaurant! My husband and I walked in at 10 PM for a to go order and the kitchen was kind enough to let us order. Adrain was our server and he was fantastic. He sat down with us and gave us many recommendations about favorite and most authentic menu items. I don’t think I’ve ever had a server who was so excited about the food and attentive to customers. We ended up ordering the pupusas, chicken chimichanga, and Al pastor torta and it was all delicious. I’d highly recommend any of those items as they were hot, fresh, and tasty.

We love El Pope! We have been coming here for a very long time whether take out, a date night, or hosting my visiting family from NY. They take care of you so well here and the food is 10/10 all around! Drinks are good as well! They’ve never let me down.
