They used to serve their apps on a bed of cabbage. Not sure what’s going on with what I had tonight considering cabbage might be one of the cheapest things to keep in stock at a place like Taki, but my takoyaki from tonight was laying on like, 5 of the yellowest lettuce chops I’ve ever seen. It was the same mix they use for the house salad, and it’s gross when you don’t drown it in ginger dressing.
The takoyaki itself was tasteless and slightly underdone. They used to actually have bonito flakes, but the last three or so times I’ve ordered have featured a sad, limp swirl of kewpie laid individually and nothing else. This was one of the only places I could grab a box of unpretentious takoyaki (looking at you, wasabi) on this side of town without sitting down, and it’s increasingly not worth it anymore.
I took a big break from this spot because I felt like my order was getting worse every time. This is my last time ordering here, considering the most egregious part of my experience tonight: my most of my takoyaki was covered by the BOH ticket, inside the takeout box. As in I had kewpie mayo cemented to the receipt paper that was covering half of my dinner. That’s disgusting.

The teppanyaki is like every other hibachi spot you’ve ever been to. I’ve had it three times with family and it has never been anything to write home about. Ohana is right down the road and throws on a better show for a cheeky dinner, along with Waterfront for better seafood that isn’t drowning in oil. There are better sushi spots in town with a far better atmosphere.
When this place is on a roll, it hits. It used to be the spot when I didn’t feel like cooking, but the last few times I’ve ordered have been hard misses. Not sure if I’ve just been unlucky and hitting the idgaf shifts the last few times, but I’m not cool with spending 20 bucks on sad, pale dough balls and midwest fried cream cheese rolls.
I was seated at a hibachi table with a few other guests, and soon our chef arrived—an energetic man with amazing knife skills who introduced himself as Kenji. He started the show by juggling spatulas and making a volcano out of onion rings that erupted in a tower of flame. Everyone at the table cheered and laughed.
For my meal, I ordered the filet mignon and shrimp combination. Kenji cooked everything right in front of us, perfectly searing the steak and tossing shrimp tails into his hat with incredible precision. The fried rice was buttery and full of flavor, and the fresh vegetables had the perfect crunch. My favorite part was a surprise dessert: a tempura-fried banana drizzled with chocolate.
By the end of the night, I left Taki Japanese Steakhouse not only satisfied but also entertained. It felt like I had been part of a small dinner theater performance, and I couldn’t wait to tell my friends about this unforgettable experience.
