I’d left Sioux Falls heading for St. Louis with the express mission of finding a rural diner en route, I’d spent an ungodly amount on a steak dinner the night before. The goal on the entire trip was only to support local businesses & this spot delivered on every front, even if it is a tad disconcerting from the outside. Fun interaction with the server, super friendly and chatty, delightfully grumpy cook, solid breakfast and a ton of character. I’ll never not enjoy road tripping in this country and I’ll never stop looking for places like this, it’s what make America Great, it always was.

Dont let appearances decieve you. Food was really good. Just a short drive from the highway. From the outside its a bit questionable. Inside is quaint. Super friendly staff. Bathrooms. Reasonably priced. Good delishious food. Def worth a stop.

Perfect service. Owner was friendly and hell of a good cook. My pork loin freshly cooked and fried excellent not greasy and had the crunch. And the gravy soooo good. My husband’s eggs and chicken fried steak were perfectly done as well. Eggs perfectly runny to soak the steak in for the perfect bite. If we lived there would definitely be a weekly spot for us.

Highly worth the very quick drive off I-29 for some great food, small town friendliness and wonderful prices. We weren’t sure when we first pulled up (uh… is this it?) but once inside we were welcomed by all with smiles, fast service and wonderful food!!

Great diner food. The mushroom and Swiss burger was juicy and perfectly seasoned.
Crispy hashbrowns (unlike most places that give you a pile of raw, shredded potatoes).
Friendly, attentive service. Affordable prices.
We will absolutely be back any time we’re in the area.
Thanks, Decarlo Diner!

Excellent food, friendly staff (owner) and great conversation. Very deserving of the 4.9 review. The high rating is what got us to stop there while traveling south on I-29.

You cannot go wrong here. This is a situation where your meals are prepared by the owner or his son. They want you to thoroughly enjoy your meal and they personally make sure of it.
My girlfriend and I were traveling and stopped in because we have a friend back home whose maiden name is DeCarlo. That and the rating this place has achieved made it a must go.
The food was outstanding. I figured I’m in the Midwest at a diner that is at the top of its game, I should get chicken fried steak. That’s something I would never get. I didn’t even know that chicken fried steak is served with sausage gravy. I made a great choice. It was delicious. It comes with hashbrowns and those were at least tied for the best hashbrowns ever. My girlfriend went with a ham omelet that she was very happy with. She even finished it, which has never happened.
I don’t know what would ever put us back in Modale, IA, but if it happens, we won’t pass up the Decarlo Diner!

Looking for family owned, not the village inn/Perkins place for breakfast. We were in Missouri valley and goole showed decarlos. NOT disappointed at all!! Food was so good, so much better than other places. Eggs were cooked exactly how I wanted, the bacon was cooked to order and the chicken fried steak was AMAZING. Will definitely recommend and come back

It’s always the small, obscure, off-grid, hole-in-the-wall places that have the BEST food, and this place is no exception. Park on the grass or the side of the road, only a few tables, but the BEST, friendliest service you could ask for! HIGHLY recommend!
