We’ve been getting our usual order of burritos and tacos from Pepinos to take home every other week for 8 years. Time to write a review.
This isn’t the only Mexican food we eat… not at all. Some places are better for certain things than others. But Pepinos food is consistently great. Their portions have stayed large, their ingredients are excellent, and their prices have remained reasonable while everywhere else’s prices have skyrocketed and/or their quality declined. I’m not even sure how Pepinos is doing it at this point. The people who work here are super sweet. And… one of their free salsas is THE BEST salsa in the PNW. It’s so addictive that we keep containers of it in the freezer. I’ll let you figure out which one it is 😉

If you’re attending a concert at the Hawthorne, you’re more than likely to end up stopping in for lunch, or at least a margarita, before your show (sadly, they’re usually not open late enough for post-concert grub). You’re even likely to run into your favorite band’s members here, if you’re lucky.
That’s not the only reason to like Pepino’s, though: they make some damn fine Mexican food, quick, fresh, and some seriously sizeable portions. Heck, I ordered just three tacos, and they came with enough carne asada to fill an entire fourth taco (or more); I had to grab a fork to scoop it all together and finish it! Coupled with an excellent salsa bar, you can customize your order to your taste, and heat level.
Staff are friendly, and FAST: my order ended up sitting on the counter for a couple minutes, because I wasn’t paying attention, and didn’t think there was any way it could be ready yet. Interior decor is lively and colorful without being gaudy, and has always been clean and tidy, even when they get busy. The only thing confusing to me (at first) was where to toss my trash and tray, as there aren’t any garbage cans in sight. However, there are signs that clarify that you just put everything in the bus bins, and the staff will take care of sorting the trash, recycling, and reclaiming the trays. Very convenient, and thoughtful of them!
You don’t have to be going to a concert at the Hawthorne to need a reason to come to Pepino’s; they’re great enough to stand on their own, and be a destination unto themselves. Anyone looking for fast, fresh, delicious Mexican food, served by friendly staff in a fiesta-like atmosphere can’t go wrong with this place! Very recommended!

Vibrant and warm atmosphere and service. House made horchata was just how I like it, not to sweet, a little cinnamon, a little thick but not grainy. Baja fish taco was bomb. Pastor taco had nice crunch/char from the griddle. There was a salsa bar, a must have in my opinion, with yummy salsas. I will be going back.

I went here to get some fuel before getting a 5 hr tattoo down the street. I looked them up in advance and was really excited to go. when i got there, i was even more blown away. the prices were fantastic and when i saw my FOOD and the PORTION SIZE i was simply in heaven the flavor of the food only made it better. so glad i found this place. it might be hard to tell in this photo, but those plates are huge. i truly did not think i was going to finish it all but best believe i found room

I’ve been coming here since I was a kid! All of their specialty burritos are delicious! I also love their taquitos, and love to get a chicken quesadilla! I think the chicken is the best here with their Hot salsa! Chips are that perfect crunch! The only thing that would put this place over the top is if they created a specialty margarita menu!

This used to be very nice place in the 1990’s. Now, like every place else, it’s dirty and the food is unacceptable. I only got a basic bean and cheese burrito: The beans were undercooked (contained hard raw pieces), and extremely salty. The tortilla was also undercooked and doughy. I think restaurants are buying uncooked tortillas and staff is serving them, as is; without realizing that they need to be cooked some. But seriously, you can’t put so much salt in things (also going around the restaurants on Hawthorne). BEANS HAVE TO BE COOKED.

Very cheap food, and very worth the price. Not the best food ever, but $8 for a burrito and chips with a salsa bar? Thats crazy cheap. Ive gone back about 5 times now because of how affordable it is. Very consistent, never had anything bad. The margaritas are way too sweet though. Quick and casual place.

Pepinos gives the vibe of an authentic Mexican spot, but unfortunately, neither the food nor the drinks lived up to that expectation. The margarita was watered down and I couldn’t even tell if there was any liquor in it. The tacos felt overpriced for what they were, and the service was just okay. I also found it odd that a place claiming authenticity didn’t offer a proper spicy habanero sauce. The person taking orders seemed disinterested, and while the steak tacos were decent, they weren’t anything memorable.

Shrimp tacos are amazing!! Loaded with shrimp and veggies, never worried about a shrimp less bite. Salsa bar! Staff are friendly and kind.
