We visited this cozy French restaurant in Hillcrest on Saturday evening right after the New Year, and it was a wonderful experience. Some Christmas decorations were still up.
It’s family-owned, and you’ll often see the husband and wife greeting guests, serving tables, and checking in. Even though they’ve been open less than a year, the restaurant already has a great buzz. The space is small and fills up fast, so reservations are highly recommended.
We ordered the Tuna Crudo, Roasted Beet Salad, Wild King Atlantic Salmon, Duck Confit, and Red Wine Poached Pear. Everything was excellent, but the Duck Confit completely stood out—by far the best duck dish I’ve ever had, incredibly tender with a unique flavor. I’ll definitely be back just for that. The bread shown in photos must be ordered separately for an extra charge.
I want to come to try other dishes as well.

We had an absolutely wonderful dining experience from start to finish. We began with the escargot, which was perfectly prepared—rich with garlic and butter, and just the right texture. The house-made herbed butter and baguette were heavenly—the bread had the ideal crunch on the outside with a warm, soft interior, and the butter was so flavorful it was downright addictive.
For the main course, I had the steak frites, which was cooked to perfection. It was topped with truffle, mushrooms, and a beautifully balanced sauce that brought everything together. My husband ordered the beef bourguignon, and it was equally impressive—the beef was incredibly tender, and the mashed potatoes, vegetables, and pearl onions complemented it perfectly.
We sipped on Kir Royales, which were light, bubbly, and delicious. To end the meal, we indulged in the tableside crème brûlée—an absolute treat and a fantastic finish.
Beyond the amazing food, the service truly stood out. The staff was warm, welcoming, and attentive throughout. The ambiance was comfortable and inviting, making the entire evening feel special.
We’ll definitely be returning soon!

I absolutely love this spot – it’s comfortable and cozy, the owners are locals, the food is delicious, and the vibe is upbeat. Most recently we had an early New Years Eve dinner and celebrated by enjoying the prix fixe menu, with beet salad, tuna crudo, steak frites, and boeuf bourguignonne. Really indulgent and spot on. Support this local business! Make reservations, because it filled up.

The Brunch was enjoyable. My friends and I enjoyed the Ratatouille Omelette, French Toast, Frenchy’s Open Face Omelette, freshly baked baguette and coffee. It is a nice quaint place and the decor is nicely done and feels really special. The service was friendly and good.

Frenchy’s Hideout should absolutely be your next must visit romantic date night spot. The food was divine and the owners, Paola and Michael, were just so warm, attentive, and passionate! The duck breast was cooked perfectly – crispy skin on the outside but tender and juicy on the inside. The ratatouille will knock your socks off – I have never in all my life had a ratatouille this good (it’s Michael’s mother’s recipe!)

Other stand outs were the elegant yet complex crudo, the flambé’d tableside crème brûlée and the ab-so-lutely perfect french onion soup. Really I have eaten at so many French spots around California and in my opinion this beats them all out, including notable Michelin restaurants.

Did I mention the drinks? My foodie girlfriend commented that she hasn’t had a Sangria so tasty since her time in Europe. The wine pairing was certainly an adventure with each wine masterfully paired to each dish. The Margarita was also oh so excellent!

Frenchy’s Hideout is such a lovely new addition to Hillcrest; we can’t wait to go back and try everything else on the menu! The prix fixe is a great deal and you certainly get your money’s worth. They’re already getting busy soon after opening, so make sure to jump on the opportunity to try it before it becomes hard to get a reservation!

SOO…Here’s the scoop ! I’ve already been a couple of times and I AM HOOKED. So happy to have some amazing French food here in San Diego. The team here is really crushing it and they even have happy hours and wine dinners ( I just went to one this week). I’ve tried so many classics from the mussels to the French Onion soup (made w/ cognac), beef bourguignon, tableside creme brulee and more. OMG, I almost forgot the Filet Mignon Burger with frites and shaved truffles- WHOA. Please give it a try and see what you think and maybe you’ll see me there since I can’t get enough of this new local gem. Did I mention the super reasonable pricing in today’s times – fantastic quality at an amazing price. Thank you Frenchy’s and see you again, soon. Dave 🙂
ps…great wines and bar scene fun for solo diners, too. Vive La France

I came here with my wife for dinner and we loved everything. Beautiful restaurant with excellent food and amazing service. Owner Michael Simpson came to our table and brought us wine pairings with the price fixed menu and talked to us about his life as a sommelier.

He made wine recommendations which made every course that much better. Every course was excellent and the service was excellent . We will be back again snd again and again.

Frenchy’s Hideout is a gift to the neighborhood!
From the perfectly balanced cocktails and clearly intentional wine selection, to the mouthwatering dishes and classy atmosphere, this place hits all the marks.
Service was on point as well.
Highly recommend the Thon Cru (Ahi Crudo) and Steak Frites – both notably crafted with great attention to detail. The peppercorn sauce on the steak is worth writing home – unrivaled here in San Diego I’d even dare to say.

Love the sunset vibe on the patio. Great date spot, amazing happy hour, and furry friends are welcome too!! ♥️
10/10 ✨ Will definitely be back

This place feels like home! Michael is incredibly welcoming and kind… and the food is the best I’ve had since moving to San Diego 6 months ago! The steak frites is one of the best dishes I’ve had EVER. Their wine options are delicious too. Very authentic and yummy to the core. Plus, they’re dog friendly!!! I cannot say enough good things. We will be back very soon!

Excellent service and welcoming staff as others outlined but the food is so so. Escargot should be singing but missing flavor. Add salt, garlic a bit more love. The mussels had some beards but otherwise good. Not sure if ill come back. $20 a glass of wine is a bit steep…perhaps their happy hour draws in customers as I came later in the evening.
