This is a newly opened restaurant, and we decided to try it since we were passing by. Their maocai (a type of traditional Sichuan hot pot) was incredibly delicious. I highly recommend their classic hot pot maocai; if you can’t handle spicy food, remember to tell the server cook little spicy. The owner was very welcoming, and the service was excellent.Five stars.

A few days ago, I saw an ad for Mao Master, a newly opened Maocai (a type of Sichuan hot pot) restaurant in Alhambra. The name sounded interesting at first, but my Sichuan friend said it’s actually a long-established brand from Chengdu! They’ve been eating there since they were kids, and it’s the first one in Los Angeles, so I had to try it!

The selection is amazing! From sliced beef and bean curd sheets to tripe, beef tendon, meatballs, fried eggs, lotus root slices, seaweed…even duck tongue and braised dishes are all available! Everything is $15.99 per pound. You can choose from red oil broth, dry-mixed Maocai, spicy mixed broth, etc. I chose the classic red oil ️ mild spicy. Their broth is truly fragrant! It’s practically drinkable! With the addition of bird’s eye chilies, it has a rich spiciness, not overly salty or oily. However, the mild spicy isn’t very spicy; I’ll have to try the extra spicy next time! [laughing emoji] They also have hot braised dishes, with duck wings for only $1.99.
