It had been a minute. I remembered it being good, but damn, in fact the food is great! I had 6 piece ribs, beans and greens and this was a MEAL. Ribs smoky and savory, flavorful from first to last. Beans delightfully sweet and tangy. The greens extremely well seasoned with some heat. I went from so hungry to absolutely ready to lay down for a food nap. This is a true personal-service hole in the wall. They were out of a few things. But what I got was perfect, so why would I care?

What I support for this establishment is less about its food but more about its message and the way it serves communities. Ever since 2020, the climate surrounding the George Floyd Square has changed dramatically, and this establishment has become an even stronger integral part of the community as the square itself had represented how the community thrives with its people. A lot of respect for the establishment from that perspective.

In terms of food, I would say the soul food, which contained mostly sides, were the main highlight for me. The mac & cheese was salty enough. The fries were solid in a “you can’t really go wrong with it” type of way. The candied yams had enough sweetness. The collard greens could taste better but standards must be lower when they’re not homemade. I also enjoyed the catfish fillets as they were fried to preserve enough hotness and softness. A lot of what they served, they made on the spot, which was what may be causing longer wait for some.

Meat-wise, a lot of items could use further improvement because they were too dry, such as the smoked wings and the beef brisket. The wings were dry to the point that they condensed and got extremely salty. The brisket relied a lot on the sauce and the existing fat on the meat for juiciness while the meat itself didn’t have a lot of flavor or juice. As for the ribs, they had some seasoning, and tasted just fine, and weren’t as dry. But I have had ribs in Texan barbeque places before and knew what “seasoned” ribs were like and therefore concluded that the ribs here were not spectacular.

With all that said, however, I still will return here as often as I can because I love supporting this business. The person serving me was very hospitable and patient. I still got some pretty solid barbeque even if it’s not Texas. Besides, outside just the barbeque food, the soul food was solid, like I had mentioned above.

Good Black Owned BBQ!! Kinda taste like your uncle on the grill at the family reunion Haven’t been to this spot since George Floyd, thought they were closed, went today and customer service was Excellent, Food was Good as well, I just would’ve like the sauce to be more sweet & tangy. I will return, their French fries are amazing dipped in the BBQ sauce

I loved my food. I wanted to see the George Floyd memorial, while walking around, the smell of bbq hit my nose. I ordered ribs, Mac n cheese and yams.

When I got to my hotel it was almost 30 minutes later. Ribs and yams were a 10/10. The sauce that came with it, also fire. The Mac and cheese was a littleeee underwhelming but I didnt leave a single noodle behind so… ill give it a 9 for what it was.

Whenever I am back in town, ill have to stop here again. Everyone I interacted with from staff to other customers were exceptional beautiful people.

Quick and efficient. I called ahead and the time was perfect and spot on. Street parking is available and I had no problem finding a spot. Signage is easy to read and very visible. Food was great! Rib tips came with BBQ sauce on the side, I enjoy the fact I had the option to choose how much sauce I wanted to put on my tips. The BBQ sauce came in great portion. Catfish was classic, packaged well with my tips. I didn’t have to worry about food being soggy because it was prepared/packaged well. Yams were phenomenal! I will return, I want to see what else the menu has to offer. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable. I enjoyed the entire experience!

First time customer here…

I wanted to give three stars but I gave four because of the customer service. I ordered through door dash who said the restaurant didn’t open until 3pm. It was after 4 when I ordered and shortly after I got an email saying they didn’t have the brisket and that I was going to get a rib bucket and charged an extra $5.

I don’t eat pork. I called door dash to cancel my order and then the restaurant. When I called the restaurant I was made aware that they had actually been open since 1pm but the brisket wasn’t ready. Later in the evening I called to see if the brisket was ready. Technically they were done with it for the evening but the man I spoke with said he would get me together. I was grateful.

So I get my food.. The Candied Yams were pretty good, they reminded me of growing up. The Greens were good at the first bite and then this smokiness kicked in and then came the spice. I don’t like spicy greens. My kid likes them though. After all day of craving brisket, I get it and I was a little disappointed. The brisket okay but it was a little tough and not as tender as I had been anticipating, also, it was not well seasoned. The bbq sauce saved it. I was hoping for some juicy, tender brisket with a nice smoke ring. My fries weren’t in the bag either. Given that I placed my order close to their closing time (I was lucky I had no idea they were getting ready to close) I would say I had a pretty good experience. All in all for the price and the accomodations, I would order again. 7/10

Phenomenal food, very cool people, just a gem of a place. I’m not even from the state and I’m already finding excuses to head back to Minneapolis for that good ‘que. If more stars were available I would gladly add them.

Smoke in the Pit has amazing food! The meat has an amazing smoke flavor throughout. The bbq sauce was tasty and enhanced the flavor. There’s a good selection of tasty sides as well. I’d recommend this if you’re looking for a local bbq joint, that has food made with love!! Only downside is, the restaurant is take out only.

So the meat was good. It was tender and seasoned. The problem was the sides. The spaghetti was like family reunion spaghetti. I want the spaghetti that’s on your stove that you will feed you and your family. Not the free family reunion spaghetti. The macaroni was definitely box. BUT, I ATE ALL OF IT! lol Sweet potatoes definitely good too. The greens, also a problem. They didn’t give me my cake so Idk how that taste. I will order again just different sides. Oh and those beans were super trash. I don’t even know what kind of beans they were supposed to be. Also the sauce was good

Don’t go here based on the nearly 5 star reviews like I did. I thought it would be a little hole in the wall with some good BBQ, but it was a waste of time and money.

I had the lunch menu brisket sandwich and fries. Plenty of fries, but they weren’t that good, and while I waited for my food for 10 minutes (I was the only one there), I could hear the microwave going on and off.

They were heating up my brisket in there, and even then it wasn’t hot upon receiving it.

Bottom line: Save your time and money, this is a dive and the food is garbage.

I think the only people who like this must be used to the dollar menu at McDonald’s and love anything CHEAP.
