Reviews
We dined at Next for their Winter “Japan” menu with high expectations, especially after two fantastic experiences at Alinea and other Michelin-star restaurants in Chicago. Unfortunately, most of the dishes felt underwhelming, and there wasn’t a single standout course that justified the anticipation.
While the presentations were beautiful and thoughtfully plated, the flavors and combinations often didn’t come together in a compelling way.
Service was professional and attentive, but it couldn’t make up for a menu that lacked depth and a defining highlight. Given the restaurant group’s reputation, this was our biggest culinary disappointment in Chicago.
One regret was splurging on the wine tasting. It was too much wine, and I didn’t appreciate the pairing (others might). I wish I had a few glasses ala carte instead.
Every course was precise, elegant, and layered with depth, showcasing both traditional inspiration and modern execution. The Ultra Reserve wine pairing elevated the entire experience—expertly curated and dynamic, with standout selections and a few sake pairings that complemented the menu flawlessly.
Service was exceptional from start to finish: attentive without being intrusive, genuinely friendly, and highly knowledgeable. The team clearly understands the menu and pairings at a deep level, which adds another layer of enjoyment to the experience.
A quick note on the wine for fellow enthusiasts: I opted for the highest-priced pairing, expecting a lineup of heavy-hitting, “prestige” labels. Instead, the selection leaned heavily toward rare and obscure finds. While it wasn’t exactly what I expected (I was hoping for a bit more “grandeur” given the price point), I have to admit the selections were fascinating. They were rare, intellectually stimulating, and paired with surgical precision.
The service, however, was flawless. The staff’s knowledge and their ability to explain the nuances of both the food and the rare pours were perfect.
Even with the unexpected direction of the wine cellar, the overall experience was world-class. Two thumbs up.
Amazing. This specific menu does not have a weak dish. Even the dessert at the end felt like it got better and better with each successive bite. I wasn’t sure I enjoyed the first bite, but by the second and third, you’re getting the different layers of flavor shining through.
Service is some of the best in the city.
Great atmosphere.
Service was great, but I expected more crispness (similar to what you see at Alinea). Ambiance missed the mark completely. Restaurant is loud, you can barely hear the server, yet you hear conversation at the table next to you to the fullest. Ambiance was less than what you would see in a home made production. Cleanliness left to be desired (bathroom, hallways, entrance).
The service though was so so. Good overall, but we felt rushed. I was literally asked if I can grab the grissini in my hand, so a server could take the bread plate away (a no no for that kind of a restaurant). And same guy took a plate away later while my wife was still eating.
The other thing that didn’t match the food level is the atmosphere. It was very loud. Tables are too close together and music selection was not befitting the food.
Food is already at 2* without doubt in my view, the rest they still have some work to do.
