Food is delicious, here’s why:
– flavor combination and balance is spot on and the dishes are great if your looking for dishes/flavors you won’t find at most other restaurants
– great variety of dishes without having an overwhelming menu. I’d say there is something for everyone. There are lighter dishes like the roti and papaya salad and heavier and spicy ones like the eggplant (chefs kiss, fr).
– portions are good, as in, not too small, but also not too large. We had just enough of a dish and had room to keep trying other dishes.
– ok ok the dessert is perfection, please get it
My favs so far have been the roti with both dipping sauces (one is spicy), the eggplant (spicy), the beef tartar, and the ayam penyet (fried chicken dish).
The papaya salad was delicious and refreshing, however I was expecting sweet, orange papaya and I think this used green papaya, perhaps both? Good, bright lime flavor.
Make reservations in advance, street parking should be easy to find. Bar is for walk-in’s, but it stays pretty busy here.
Happy dining!
First id like to tip my hat to the chef. The food was absolutely amazing. Every dish was a 10 out of 10. Exquisite.
But, the service lacked a little. We didn’t see her much. I wanted drink refills and didn’t get them. It was our 19th year anniversary and my wife’s birthday so I was hoping the experience could have been better.
The dining area is rather small but that was OK. Parking was easy to find but could be limited due to the street location.
I’ll definitely come back and try the experience again. (Try the eggplant!)
As far as service goes, the hostess with short blonde hair is super rude and has awful manners. Her energy and looks the entire evening were super negative and while I know everyone has off nights, it seems like she is just a rude person.
Luckily, the bartender was helping us and was much kinder and pleasant.
The noodles with short ribs were good, but the other 4 dishes (family style sharing) were dull or tasted like one thing, usually spice or peanut. The staff were kind, but their expertise was put on display when we asked whether a dish would go well with a rose and the waitress said that “a Cabernet would be better because it’s lighter”. We went with the rose . The broccolini were chopped up like canned food, undercooked (stingy/ fibery) and just tasted like Sriracha – canned Sriracha but for $16 or so.
The cocktails were yummy even though it was a bit heavy on the bitters. No military discount either. They were flexible on our reservation (we showed up early). Music was good and also a good volume. Presentation of food was good, but that’s secondary to taste. This was my second visit – I won’t be coming back unless some changes happen.
Sometimes fusion dishes can taste a little odd, especially to South East Asian natives like myself who are accustomed to having ‘authentic’ dishes whipped up by our grandmothers on a regular basis but Dija Mara has shown that fusion can be done well in the right hands.
Service was also very good. Staff were attentive and observant. Could tell they really care about their customer’s experience.
Definitely recommend!
