Pelkey’s Catskills Tavern is so much more than a business—it’s a lifelong dream come true. For more than two decades, I worked in publishing, as a Production Director, Photographer, Writer, Designer, but the off-duty me was the real me: hiking and fly-fishing, building motorcycles, and hot rods, firing up the grill and smoker, and mixing drinks for friends. I had been looking for the right spot to open a bar-restaurant for years before I found the perfect place—a roadside barroom and barn in the quiet hamlet of Hankins, New York. I love its laidback vibe and its long history, which dates to1890’s—first as a home, a boarding house and many different bars.

The service was excellent, and the live band added so much to the experience—great music at the perfect volume. You could enjoy it outside by the fire pit and still carry on a conversation inside. I ordered the Diablo, one of their specialties, and was pleasantly surprised by both the flavor and the portion size. The fries are outstanding too!
For the quality and amount of food, the prices are very reasonable. This is an easy stop right off Route 86. If you’re traveling from the City up to the Catskills or further into Upstate NY, definitely add Pelkey’s Tavern to your trip—you won’t be disappointed!
2025 Edit: food good. Beer good. Prices good. Outside usually has fire and I’m a moth to the flame. Live music sometimes. They let me play the piano which is cool too.
I found the bar to be lively, all of the patrons were enjoying themselves and having a good time. I met the owner “Bill Pelkey” who was working behind the bar on his birthday as fate would have it. He was a gregarious fellow. Pleasant at first but then all business. Understandable with the growing crowd of patrons he was serving. He did take the time to pose for a picture with me. I never made the cut for his “VIP” section though. I think it’s for Steelers fans only…
