Three Owls at the Elms Hotel in Excelsior Springs was a nice place for dinner. We were seated right away and the ambience was cozy, especially with the fireplace going. We were able to choose our table, which made the experience feel relaxed and comfortable.
The food was good and tasted fresh. The only downside was how long everything took. There were only a few couples in the restaurant, yet each part of the meal felt slow to arrive. Maybe that is why their food tastes good. It seems like they take their time with every dish.
Overall it was a pleasant experience with a warm atmosphere and good food, just be prepared for a slower pace.

I had high expectations of the food based on my experience at the spa and in the hotel itself. The food was not amazing, with the exception of the pork belly -that was amazing. I ordered the NY Strip steak and it was not cooked properly (I asked for medium rare and it was barely rare). They didn’t offer to order a new dish or steak, but the manager offered to just to fire it up again and it took two tries, and a different server brought it over and asked if I wanted it medium, and I said no, medium rare but this isn’t that. He didn’t seem to agree. The Caesar salad was pretty bland, and I wished it would be good because I’ve had some amazing house made Caesar dressing and house made croutons -I’ve had better store bought salads, and there was even a $2 up charge. I ordered the potatoes and they were pretty, but not seasoned. The texture was off (maybe too much liquid), although again piped beautifully into the bowl. I wanted to be impressed but honestly I would not eat here again.

This was a weird experience. At breakfast, it was absolutely incredible. The service was on point and the food was delivered hot and fast to our table.
At dinner, they were trying so hard but it seemed like they were understaffed and needed more help in the front and back of the house. We both had pasta with a cream based sauce that was not served warm enough. The bread was dry (even with butter).
We had a custom cake to celebrate my husband’s birthday and the manager delivered it to our table. Unfortunately, it was fresh from the refrigerator and cold cake doesn’t taste the best. I’m posting pictures of both breakfast and lunch.

While previous Thanksgiving dinners here have been stellar, this year fell very short. I understand that it is quite busy, but the seating was not handled well. The young lady calling out names when it was time to be seated was barely audible & did not pay attention to what was going on. I had just talked with her so when she called us we made eye contact & I acknowledged that we were coming. When we got to the podium I told one of the ladies that was ushering people to their seats that the Krueger party was here. She informed the lady at the podium, but was told we were not the “Party Called” that is was another party who had just checked & the usher should seat them! This other party was taken into the main dining room immediately. The lady in charge continued to seat other parties that had arrived well after us so we asked why we weren’t being seated after being called. She asked our name (after just moments before making eye contact) & when I told here, her face went blank. She then proceeded to seat us next but in the overflow room far away from the buffet line and my 88 year old Mother was getting tired from standing! We asked that we be seated in the main dining room as was originally what we were called for. After a few more minutes they did accommodate us & I was able get Mom a seat. I was thankful for that but the entire seating process was controlled chaos at best. Then the majority of the food was cold to luke warm! The gravy was watery, turkey dry & cold & the tables in the buffet, especially the dessert tables, were incredibly messy. All this was uncharacteristic of previous experiences at The Three Owls. Before the turkey was brined delightfully and was carved to order thus staying hot & juicy; this was a very noticeable difference this year. Finally, after several servers passed by our table without so much as a nod, one of our party went over to the water station & got us all something to drink! Had to serve ourselves! When we were almost finished with our meal a server stopped and asked if we needed anything and offered tea. We told here we were almost done & had gotten our own water, but byes, we would very much like some tea. She was very apologetic & offered to comp the tea. While this was kind on her part; are you kidding??? For that price for cold food & no service you are charging extra for iced tea?? WTH? The coffee with desert was going to be another $8?? YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING!! But you’re not. Due to the extreme overall downturn in comparison to previous experiences we will, unfortunately, be looking elsewhere for future holiday dinners. So sorry to this happen to what was such a wonderful experience.

Beautiful looking restaurant, but overall our family agreed it was the worst dining experience we’ve had our entire lives. The food was terrible – the mile high lasagna was inedible by all 4 of us – dry, no meat, disgusting cheese covering it. The “truffle fries” were just regular fries with cheese on top again. The drinks – a bottle of beer and glass of wine took 20 minutes to get to us. The service was so bad we started to question if we were in on some kind of prank or joke. It was truly the worst dinner I’ve ever had and worst service and I left after an hour upset I was out $90. Super disappointing experience.

We were here for dinner on Thanksgiving. I ordered the grilled bass over mushroom risotto topped with a Romesco sauce, it was delicious! My husband ordered the traditional lasagna, it was very pastey and dry, it would have been delicious if they would’ve topped that with the romesco sauce. Our tab was $78 with no drinks. Undecided if we will go back.

My husband and I stopped here today and went to the three owls restaurant. We sat at a table and waited quite a while for someone to notice. After waiting several minutes, my husband got up from our table and asked at the bar if we could get some service. “Oh, of course, someone will be right over.” We waited another good 10 minutes. There was hardly anyone in there so they couldn’t blame it on being busy. Finally after being ignored by other passerby waitresses, a server came to our table with water and asked us to move to another table because, “the one we sat at was dirty.” We asked her if they could just clean it off because it was in front of the fireplace. She said another server would be out. The server never came. We were out celebrating my husband’s birthday so it was a special day. At least we thought so. We had been to the Elms a couple of times before but we had never been treated this badly. After waiting again my husband was getting quite irritated and went to talk to someone, again. He got a grouchy old white hair headed woman that told him they were busy and would be there when they could. When he came back to the table, we were both disgusted and decided to leave. As we were getting ready to leave the grouchy woman came to the table with a menu. Mind you, no one offered us anything from the bar while we waited or even apologized for the wait. I decided to give it one more shot and asked her what they were serving because earlier she barked at my husband and told him they weren’t serving any dinners until 5:00. She shoved the menue literally in my face and barked,”ma’am, this is all we are serving right now.” She just kept barking and frowning at us. It felt like she would rather we got up and left so she didn’t have to serve us. So that is exactly what we did! We stood up and said we were leaving and she started talking over me. I told her I didn’t want to hear her talk anymore and we walked out. Absolutely terrible experience! We had never seen such terrible customer service. Her nasty attitude ruined the day!

Had a great experience at the Elms Spa and the poolside bar and the hummus we ordered poolside was delicious. With that being said the 3 Owls restaurant leaves a lot to be desired. We were sat 45 mins after our reservation, they did make that right be providing a free appetizer. So at this point we were still expecting to have a great dinner. I ordered the pork chops, I am old school so I ordered it well done. It wasn’t well done, there was no seasoning on it. Potatoes were instant and at $38 for the plate, I expected real or at least an attempt to hide that they were instant. Husband ordered the Sea Bass it came with a red topping that was way too much. And the risotto was gummy. Server told us she was new, but she seemed to be new w/o any training. We had to ask a busser to check on my husband’s drink from the bar, because it had been 15 mins since it was ordered. It was there and watered down by the time he got it. Server was running to and fro but didn’t seem to be doing anything. So disappointed!
