Everyone was super helpful and the breakfast bakery options looked scrumptious ! Had a coffee ☕️ barista and cool dining area. Also a beautiful cigar room and a stage setup outside for events. Will be back soon to enjoy all that Griffin Lounge has to offer!
I learned that the building was formerly the Petersburg bus station, a segregated facility during the Jim Crow era. The space that now serves as the cigar lounge was once designated for white passengers only. In 1960, the station became the site of a series of sit-ins led by Petersburg pastors and civil rights leaders, including Wyatt Tee Walker, former Chief of Staff to Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The historical significance of this landmark is still very present and officially registered. Remarkably, you can still see dark spots on the floor from fires that were burned to keep warm during the sit-ins. This bus station ultimately became one of the first integrated bus stations in Virginia.
After taking in the history, I explored the menu and ordered the shakshuka, an Arabic dish featuring eggs simmered in a spiced tomato sauce with sautéed peppers and caramelized onions. I paired it with a sand-brewed coffee experience, which was both unique and fascinating to watch. I also ordered the croissant steak and cheese, made with caramelized onions, melted white American cheese, and a freshly baked in-house croissant. To complement it, I enjoyed golden tea, steeped with evaporated milk, clove, cinnamon, and cardamom. All of their pastries are made fresh in-house daily. For dessert, I tried the peanut butter Reese’s cookie, and it did not disappoint.
After breakfast, I discovered their cigar lounge, which is spacious and well-designed with a wide selection of cigars and plenty of seating for everyone. After spending some time in the cigar lounge and enjoying a game of chess, we returned to the restaurant to relax with a couple of beverages. We ordered the Turkish lemonade and hibiscus tea, both refreshing and well crafted. To top it off, there was a gentleman performing live music on a Friday morning no less which added an unexpected and delightful touch to the experience.
A special thank you to AJ for taking the time to elevate our experience at Griffin Lounge. Your attention to detail, menu knowledge, coffee experience, and exceptional customer service along with the entire staff made our first visit unforgettable. I highly recommend Griffin Lounge for brunch. You will not be disappointed.
We ordered an iced golden tea, and an iced mocha, which wasn’t on the menu, but the owner told us “If you can close your eyes and think of it, we can make it for you.” Which is fantastic customer service.
We also ordered a chicken, egg, and cheese bagel, and a regular egg and cheese bagel with a side of the Thai fries and regular fries.
Both the drinks and food were delicious! I never had a golden tea before, and it was smooth and creamy, similar to a chai latte, but more subtle. It was very pleasant. And my boyfriend really enjoyed the mocha, saying it was warm and comforting.
The food came out quickly and the bagles were soft while still crispy on the edges. They were simple sandwiches, but very satisfying, and the chicken, egg, and cheese one was even better. The Thai fries were delicious with just the right amount of heat, and the regular fries were nice and crispy with the right amount of salt.
We will definitely be coming back here.
