Tay Ho (St. Paul, MN) – My Annoying Opinions

Tay Ho is a small but bright restaurant, with parking alongside. Well, I say it’s small but it’s larger than both Trieu Chau and Thai Cafe.

I’ve been craving bún bò huế for a while but was hesitant to try it just anywhere. After hearing that Tay Ho serves some of the best in the Twin Cities, I finally decided to check it out and wow, it did not disappoint!

The broth came out piping hot, rich, and full of flavor. It was loaded with generous chunks of brisket and a pork hock that soaked up all that goodness perfectly. The meat was tender and paired so well with the noodles and herbs.

The lady who served my friend and I was kind and attentive, always refilling our water and checking in on us without being overbearing.

We also ordered egg rolls and spring rolls on the side. The egg rolls were crispy and flavorful, but the spring rolls weren’t really my favorite. The pork had a slightly funky taste.

The restaurant itself is cozy with tables close together, so you might catch snippets of nearby conversations. Parking can be a little tight too, but it’s manageable.

Overall, the food and service here totally won me over. I’ll definitely be back for their bún bò huế and to try more items from the menu next time!

Well, I have for many years tried to support this restaurant as a nearby part of the Frogtown community where I work. But unfortunately, I recently had a very negative experience. Typically, I would ask the staff/ownership prior to posting a flyer for free English and Citizenship classes open to everyone for a Hmong community organization as I had done on numerous occasions. On this day, the staff were very occupied. I posted a flyer as I have done many times in the past and the owner came running out to the entryway scolding me for posting on the bulletin board on her “private property”. I apologized, noted I was posting for free English and Citizenship classes open to the community and asked for her permission, she left in a huff without saying “yes” or “no.”. I would like to note that the owner of this Vietnamese restaurant has Hmong language signs on her storefront and clearly relies on this community for much of her business. I would encourage her to look beyond her narrow walls to have a more positive attitude to the Frogtown community and the broader community in St. Paul on which she relies to support her business. I have worked in a “privately owned” building in Frogtown for many years and we have never chased out anyone for coming into the building putting up flyers for community-related services or even business cards. With this kind of attitude, it is hard to support this business with so many other good choices for similar food in St. Paul and the Twin Cities. This entire experience really disappointed me as I have tried to support Tay Ho as a customer for probably 20 years. It will be hard to support this business going forward.

Recently visited St Paul to attend the Minnesota Yacht Club Festival. I am a self proclaimed Pho Connoisseur and Tay Ho did not disappoint. Located in Hmong Town. When I walked in I immediately knew I was in for a treat. I ordered the Pho Tai and shrimp spring rolls. The rolls were freshly made and brought to the table promptly. The Pho followed shortly. The broth was excellent. Nice balance of onion. Noodles were abundant and cooked well. Provided the standard Pho setup (mint leaves, sprouts, peppers). The beef was thinly sliced and rare as it should be. The restaurant was clean and busy. The staff was kind. Restaurant was comfy and homey. I recommend Tay Ho if you’re looking for traditional Vietnamese food.

We ordered the Bun Bo Hue, chicken fried rice, chicken wings (perfect crunch), bahn mi, and beef with lemon grass. Everything was absolutely delicious! Very high-quality flavors and portion was just right. We came on a weekday lunchtime and it was not busy. The service was good and super fast. Got our food in less than 5 minutes.

Just had take out from here and wow! I’m a new fan. The take out pho was meticulously put together so that it could be assembled at home for the freshest experience. Then the special noodle salad was excellent as well. They are very generous with portions. Tremendous value and delicious. Can’t wait to dine in or order take out again soon.

Amazing food and perfect service. Everything tasted fresh and truly authentic, you can tell it’s made with care and tradition. Such a warm, welcoming family owned spot. We’ll definitely be back!

Service was bad. We were the only customers. It took around 25-30min to take our orders. About 4 other customers came in and they got their food first before us.

The banh mi sandwich did not taste fresh. The meat tasted old, cucumber tasted bad, parsley was discolored and not fresh.

The Pho was on the sweeter side. It was disappointing when the condiments was not fresh. The basil looks unrefrigerated and a couple of days old.

Would not recommend.

Fast and friendly service. Second time here and the food that I ordered this time was pretty good. I got the Bun Bo Hue and combo bahnmi sandwich and it was delicious! The soup was very flavorful, meaty and the broth was spicy good. The sandwich actually have a generous amount of filling (bbq pork, pork loaf and grilled pork along with your veggies). I’ve been to a lot of places where they gave you like no meat and a bunch of veggies in the sandwich.

The pho was horrible, it was too salty and it didn’t have a lot of flavor. The noodles were kind of over cooked so it was mushy. I do not recommend ordering pho at this restaurant. I order it once about 6 years ago and then decided to order this 2nd time and again it was a disappointment. Overall this 2nd time was a good experience.
