Donovan’s Irish Pub in Saint Augustine is an absolute gem and a must-visit. From the moment you walk in, you’re hit with that warm, authentic Irish pub atmosphere — cozy, lively, and welcoming without feeling touristy.
The fish and chips were AMAZING — perfectly crispy on the outside, flaky and fresh on the inside, and clearly made with care. The batter was light, not greasy, and the fries were hot, seasoned just right, and plentiful. Easily some of the best fish and chips I’ve had, not just in Florida, but anywhere.
The service was friendly, attentive, and genuinely upbeat, which really adds to the experience. Pair that with a great drink selection and a relaxed, old-world pub vibe, and you’ve got the perfect spot to unwind after exploring Saint Augustine.
Whether you’re a local or just visiting, Donovan’s Irish Pub delivers top-tier food, atmosphere, and hospitality. I’ll absolutely be back — this place earns every bit of five stars.
Unfortunately, I dealt a bit of unfriendly employee tonight. I’ve recently switched to working 3rd shift and I saw that they were open until 10 pm. I stopped in at 9:52 pm, and asked if they were still open for dine in, and if not I can carry out. The hostess comes back and says that the kitchen is closed.
I asked her if there is a usually time that the kitchen closes before the advertised hours are. She kept reiterating the fact that it was “5 minutes before closing”, and not answering my question. I already acknowledged that I wouldn’t be getting to order tonight. I’d like to be able to plan ahead so I can come eat here again with my new schedule. I never got an actual answer from her. Really disappointed with the unhelpfulness there, and I would really like an answer to that so I am able to come back and eat here again.
If the kitchen closes at 10 pm, then why are the advertised hours until 10 pm. I understand not allowing any dine in orders, but a restaurant’s kitchen shouldn’t close until the restaurant is closed.
This review is detailed because our experience was Excellent and it deserves the attention and 5-star rating.
It was a Friday night and walking through the door, the atmosphere looked comfortable, and inviting with the sound of happy customers enjoying their meals.
We were greeted immediately by a hostess with a smile as if we had just entered her home and seated us with menus. Our server was Genevieve, who promptly greeted us asked if we had any questions. We told her this was our first visit and we ordered our beers. Genevieve returned promptly with our cold beers, asked if we had any menu questions and quickly pointed out the delicious Oreo chocolate pie being served at another table. Describing her own experience as “It’s cholcolate mousse and delicious!” I said, “Then I’ll have the Cobb Salad, and save up for that dessert!” We all laughed. My husband read that Donovan’s makes their own corned beef and his sandwich matched one of the best reubens we enjoy back in a pub in Annapolis, Md. My Cobb Salad was equally good and being a bleu cheese fan I initially loved seeing the fresh bleu cheese in large amounts on my salad. I probably ate half the salad that had a nice presentation of quartered hard boiled eggs, large amount of lettuce, bacon, red onion and turkey. When Genevieve checked in on is, she saw I only ate half my salad and kindly inquired how my salad was. I didn’t complain, but mentioned the large amount of bleu cheese was just too overwhelming. My husband during this discussion had left the table and as I was describing the bleu cheese issue, Genevieve sat down on the edge of the bench to engage in the conversation and give me respectful, full attention. This really impressed me! She cleared our plates mentioning that she would let the kitchen know to lessen the bleu cheese. Of course we ordered the Oreo Pie and enjoyed Genevieve’s anticipation of our opinion. It’s a winner! When she returned with our bill she told us that my salad had been removed since I didn’t enjoy it due to the bleu cheese issue. Wow and Thank you!
The reason I wrote in such detail is not just about our server but the staff across the board are friendly, courteous and more concerned about the customer. This includes the owner who reads these reviews and responds. Our overall experience was really good and we plan to become regular customers. Well done, Donavan’s and thank you, Genevieve for enjoyable customer service!
