The crew was very friendly and kind , and the overall experience was cozy and amazing. Recommending this place 100%
We went for my birthday, the table got a few rounds of drinks (the old fashioned was 10/10), we ordered the pear Brie and onion soup for appetizers and they were amazing. The Boeuf Wellington was fire, I asked for medium rare-rare and it was slightly more medium done but was so tender I am not complaining!
Had the creme brulee for dessert and it was so buttery creamy, one of the best I’ve had.
Service was good, we were waited on attentively and everyone was very nice.
Right after walking in, I was greeted by name and seat immediately (I had a reservation). Service was prompt and I was pleased to see a small plates option where I could try many things. Bread came quickly, but it seemed like standard grocery store baguette. In true French fashion the rest of the food took a while to come out (30-40 min, but worth the wait). I did seat pretty close to 2 other tables which I could hear their conversations very clearly, which isn’t ideal. But the rest of the restaurant fades into a nice ambient noise creating a pleasant dining atmosphere.
I started with the beef Wellington. The pastry crust was unfortunately a bit soggy and didn’t stay with the beef, but otherwise the dish was excellent. The beef was tender and well seasoned. The sauce had all the good and rich flavors of the beef that made the dish tantalizing and addicting. I had to use some bread to soak up the rest of the sauce.
Then I had the mussels. The portion was fairly generous, the mussels were fresh enough, and the sauce/broth it came in paired synchronously with the mussel. The sauce was a little over salted/concentrated on its own, but when you eat the mussel, not much sticks so it balances out into a nice flavor-rich bite. In fact, I recommend doing a light scoop with the shell and eat the mussel that way to get a bit more sauce.
My main course was the roasted duck. The crust on the duck was near perfect; I could hear the crunch as I cut into it. The meat itself was a tad overcooked to where some bites were dry, but there were a few perfect bites with perfectly tender and moist meat. The berry glaze was also amazing. Its acidity and sweetness cuts through the fattiness of the duck, keeping the dish balanced. My only complaint is that it didn’t come with enough glaze. There wasn’t enough to use the glaze on the sides nor about the last 1/3 of the duck.
To finish, I had their almond dessert. To me it was somewhere between an almond croissant and a churro. It was hot, crispy, and flaky. It had a light but very present almond aroma. The sweetness was delightful and not overbearing. The hot and crispy pastry paired with the creamy vanilla ice cream honestly was heavenly. This had got to be the best dessert I’ve had in a long while.
Admittedly my heart winced a bit when I got the check. But considering the quality of service and the food I think it was worth every penny. Definitely will be back!
This restaurant is listed as Tucson’s premier French restaurant. Our second disappointment was when the bread was delivered, my assessment of the baguette was that it tasted like oven toasted bread you’d buy in any grocery store. We only ate one piece each, what’s the point of any more?
Another disappointment was the service. Most of the service was done well, but our wine was never refilled by the staff. A very minor point because pouring to refill our glasses is trivial, but it shows the lack of attention that should be provided by a high quality restaurant.
And finally, my dinner fork had one very bent tine. I didn’t complain or have it replaced but this again shows the lack of attention.
On to the food! Absolutely nothing wrong here. Our salad and French Onion soup were delicious. The Chateaubriand was presented and cooked perfectly. The Souffle was amazing (the first time I’ve ever had a souffle that didn’t fall!) and the Crème Brûlée was delicious.
All in all a fine place for a good meal, but if you want something really special consider some other options.
We started with Escargot, the Mussels in a garlicky creamy broth, and the Coquille St Jacques – Scallops served on the shell in a creamy sauce and broiled with cheese. Each appetizer gave us plenty of rich sauces perfect for soaking up with endless baskets of French bread. Not only is the bread delicious, it’s not an extra item you have to order off the menu.
What was really special is the way the staff took care of us. The head waiter was knowledgeable and knew to allow us time to linger over the food and good company. It seemed that each of the staff on the team checked in at one point or another. We ended the meal with a Baba au Rum. This could also double as an after-dinner digestif, as it was heavily soaked in liquor. I’m not complaining!
The attention to detail keeps us coming back when we can treat ourselves for a special occasion. But we could easily make a meal out of apps and dessert to keep it more affordable.
For dinner, expect to be here about 90-120 minutes. This is a dining experience and well worth the time spent.
Definitely make a reservation as it’s usually pretty busy.
Lets start with the appetizers, I ordered the 3 mushroom appetizer for $19 and out comes a triangle puff pastry with MAYBE a teaspoon of brie and a few small pieces of mushrooms, overall about the size of my palm. 80% puff pastry and the sauce tasted burnt. My buddy ordered the house made duck pate, large portion but served cold, was really flavorful, but could have jumped off the plate with a quick hard sear. Ordered escargot and was the best app of the bunch but WAY over garlicly.
Next came our French onion soups, delishious and one of the few highlights of our whole meal.
Main courses:
Beef Wellington, scallops, seas bass, and special of the night seared artic char.
Beef Wellington is a dish I have had all over the world and ordered medium rare, comes out close to well done, the pastry was hard as a rock and completely separated fron the meat, I suspect it sat under the salamander for 10+ mins. I was so disappointed, they offered to redo it but we had waited probably 30 minutes since our last course, so I ate about half.
Sea bass was an egg wash lemon caper butter, NO sauce to be found on the plate, very little capers but the fish itself had nice flavor.
Scallops in garlic aioli was outstanding and by far the best main we had, full of flavor and perfect sear on the scallops.
The artic char was done skin on, no hard sear on skin, rubbery and disappointing, served with goat cheese grits which were super flat unseasoned and grits were undercooked, nobody ate them. 3 of the four mains were served were served with “Anna Potatoes” basically a stack of thinly sliced potatoes that were over cooked and SUPER dry, we could barely cut them with our serrated steak knife. We all left them on our plates. All dishes were served with veggies of the day, squash/zucchini/red pepper, I prefer veggies slightly al dente but these all came out a bit mushy but seasoned well. That was the only item on my plate I finished.
All four of us split the almond filled pastry with a scoop of ice cream, THAT was the star of the meal, almond paste was full of flavor, the sauce was delishious.
Main server came to our table three times, once to take our order, once to check on us when I expressed my disappointment on the Wellington which we did not get charged and finally to bring the our bill, support staff was super attentive and kept drinks filled.
I left the restaurant super disappointed after hearing about this place for years and how awesome it is… French cuisine is known for the sauces we went 3 out of 4 with sauce disappointments. Don’t think head chef was in as they probably would have never let these dishes go out like they did.
