Thirty Bales is a celebration of everything Midwestern cuisine has to offer. We’re an upbeat neighborhood restaurant bringing together bright personalities, bold recipes, clean ingredients and craft spirits and playing with the flavors that make the Midwest a place unlike any other. If you’re curious about our name, it comes from the legend of Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox. As the story goes, Babe had an appetite as big as Bunyan himself and is rumored to have eaten 30 bales of hay a day. Like our restaurant’s big blue spirit animal, we’re a pack of people that lives to eat and drink. We’re endlessly in love with the Midwest and its connection to seasonal ingredients grown close to home. It’s what inspires our menu and our team,

We were driving by this place one day and decided we would come in for breakfast and we finally made it in this past weekend and it didn’t disappoint. The service was spectacular we were seated fast and didn’t have to wait too long for our food. We started off with the bottomless mimosas which were made perfectly. I liked the deviled eggs more than I thought I would. They had a nice crunch and good flavors. I got the boozy French toast, I was a little disappointed that there was no fresh fruit on the menu but the French toast was perfect. The hash browns were a little over cooked for me but overall it was a pretty solid breakfast and we will definitely visit again soon.

We utilized a free parking garage during our visit and walked less than a block to dine in.

Headed to Thirty Bales for breakfast with family. I love a good eggs Benedict, but I was shocked when this plate came out. To preface I’m not a huge fan of ham, but nowhere on the menu does it mention it’s a thick ham steak on the Benedict. I couldn’t eat it. The rest of my meal was alright. Bloody Mary would be a 5/10.

Found this place by chance. Walking in your come right up to the bar which was weird but was greeted and seated quickly. Was not busy as it was 3pm. Menu had lots options and drink menu even more. The food was good. Like really good. My salad was beyond making. The flavors all go together so well. The Cesar salad was very good according to spouse. BLT was good. Mocktail had great flavor. Beer was cold and good. Service was friendly, nice and attentive. Always knew when we needed a refill. Plenty of seating for happy hour or regular meal times. Parking along street but also a public garage across the street.

It is very rare for me to get five stars to anything but they have exceeded all of my expectations in every way imaginable. Play espresso Martini is absolutely the best espresso Martini I have had ever, hands down. The Bul Du Nord is perfect, mushrooms and the wild rice are perfect and the walleye is unbelievably tender and flavorful. The wild rice cup of soup, is slightly sweet and yet still very earthy like you would expect from a wildrice soup. Will definitely be back. The cheesecake looks absolutely amazing.

Everything was excellent. Portions were generous. The place was busy (I recommend RSVPing a table). It’s perfect for a date night.

It’s not cheap, but it is really good and offers a nice atmosphere to hang out with friends and/or family. Our server was friendly and engaging. She helped us make our minds up as we ordered.

The venue is clean and the vibe is welcoming.

As for the green coconut curry – be sure to add a protein as the curry on its own is overpowering. I got shrimp and it was excellent.

30 Bales is in a great location, near the free Hopkins parking ramps and across the street from the Hopkins Center for the Arts (which offers some great concerts and entertainment throughout the year).

Food and drinks were a mixed bag. Some items were delicious, but others were bland and flavorless.

Service was ultimately helpful (we had a dietary restriction not marked on the menu) but also incredibly awkward (repeatedly touching plates after setting them down, spending several minutes on upselling drinks and deserts, and brought me visibly the wrong drink when I did order one).

I’d like to think it was an off night and on paper the concept for the restaurant is great, but the place wasn’t even half full on a Friday night. For the price paid (a bit over $100 after tax/tip for an appetizer, two mocktails, and two mains) I’m generally unwilling to give it another shot.

Overall experience was good. My walleye sandwich was ok. The sauce was good, the ratio fish to bread was way too bread heavy. The fish was average. My cohorts said the tacos and cubano sandwich were good. We got the cheesecake and it was very disappointing. It was literally the size of a mini hockey puck and it was $9. The taste was ok, not what I expected for homemade but I’m kind of a cheesecake snob.

We enjoyed a nice meal at Thirty Bales. The devilish eggs and the fried Fresno cauliflower as starters led off a nice meal. Then we launched into the walleye and chicken piccate. The fried (Ble de Nord) walleye is served over a bowl of comfort (a rich wild rice mushroom soup). It was yummy but the fish was a bit salty. The chicken piccate was a hit. The cocktails were good also. The Paul Buntan brownie was delicious until we discovered a large chuck of ice under the ice cream. The waitress Mary Beth was super helpful on menu recommendations and getting us replacement ice cream. Thank you for a nice meal.

Pre-movie dinner. Tried a new place, since Hopkins has unique choices.
My cocktail was refreshing. I asked for tacos to be 1 cauliflower and 1 pork, rather than having to choose one or the other. Hit the spot! And my husband found a good meat choice.

So I actually wanted to go somewhere else initially and then it turned out to be at a gas station lol so I randomly searched chicken sandwich and we picked this random location.

It was sooo good! We got the spicy chicken sandwich no spice at lunch. There was waaay too much food but it was all very good. I loved the milk jug of water they left with us too. I’m never in Hopkins, but if I am, this is going to be somewhere I come to again.
