This is a small “hidden” eatery that, unless it is shown by someone local, otherwise it’s hard to find it. The place is small with 6-7 tables; no table service and there’s a kiosk at the entrance to place the order and pay for it. I tried their Dandan noodles and the fried dumplings; the dumplings were average, but I liked the noodles since it had the good numb and spicy level and the portion was good. For my own preference, I brought home most of the noodles and added some over easy eggs and a little leafy greens. Overall, not a bad place for lunch.

This is my go to Chinese takeout in Austin. It’s a no-frills restaurant that I prefer to just pickup food from. It’s ready quickly, and the food is still hot by the time I get home. My favorite part is that the portions are quite sizable, so I often have leftovers for the next day.

Great good , it was delicious we visited happy family restaurant yesterday and it was very good , then portions are fair and the prices are great. My favorite was the spicy noodles. Me and my husband were very happy to find this gem . We would definitely be back to try new dishes.

decent chinese restaurant that is hidden along guad. very convenient for ut students craving chinese food. the price is on the higher side around $16 per dish but the portions are on the higher side. both meat dishes that we ordered, double cooked pork belly and mongolian beef, had more vegetables/onion/jalepenos than meat which was disappointing.
i went with two other people and we split three dishes, we were very full afterwards and had leftovers to take home.
service was very friendly, the guy at the counter didn’t speak much english but brought over our rice, extra plates and chopsticks.

I was craving Szechuan food for lunch today. A quick Google search led me here. When I arrived it was absolutely barren inside. No patrons and just a young spanish-speaking gentleman at the counter. My gut said, “Go elsewhere,” but I thought truly can’t be too bad. The meal cost $27 out the door with tip and tax. I got the pork and garlic sauce (requested more peppercorn), white rice, egg drop soup and diet Coke. The pork dish wash spicy but also unusually sweet causing it to clash. I am a huge fan of mala Szechuan food, and this wasn’t it.
I did appreciate they used black mushroom fungus, celery and bamboo shoots, but the sauce was off. Soup did not come with “crispies” on top, so I requested them. I had to show a picture of what I was referring to in order to get my message across.
The building itself looked incredibly unkept and dilapidated. The owner should definitely consider a remodel and hopefully to reduce the price of meals as this is where students eat.
I left sad and uncomfortable.

China Family is an absolute gem! From the moment we walked in, we were welcomed by the two incredibly friendly women on staff who made us feel right at home. But the real highlight was the food—wow! We were completely wowed by every dish. The crab rangoons were the best we’ve ever had, perfectly crispy and creamy. The shrimp lo mein was packed with flavor, and the Chongqing spicy chicken quickly became a favorite with its perfect balance of heat and flavor. Plus, the portions were huge! We had plenty of leftovers to take home, which means we got to enjoy their amazing food twice. We can’t wait to come back!

China Family Restaurant is a great choice near the UT Austin campus for anyone craving bold, authentic Chinese food. The flavors are rich, spicy, and true to Sichuan and Northern Chinese cooking—dishes like mapo tofu, cumin lamb, and dry-fried green beans are packed with flavor and heat. Portions are generous, prices are student-friendly, and the food is consistently satisfying. It’s not fancy, but it’s the real deal. Perfect for a quick meal between classes or a casual dinner with friends. One of the best Chinese spots near campus, hands down.

I would consider this an authentic Chinese restaurant. You can tell by the taste of the food that they wanted to keep their originality. I got their Spicy Chicken and it was super delicious! The chicken cubes are deep fried with skin and bone still attached to it (so be warned). I thought it was really tasty. My brother got their beef fried rice. Although they give you a generous portion, I wasn’t a huge fan of the taste and had better. My friend got Fish in Chilli oil and it was really delicious! The fish was flavorful and soft.
I’d come back again 🙂

We didn’t have a great experience. The food either didn’t have a lot of flavor or tasted like it had way too much salt. The staff was nice but I won’t be back.
