Reviews
This place doesn’t aim for “good”… it dominates. It’s the kind of meal that resets your standards and makes every other lunch spot feel like it’s playing in the minor leagues.
We ordered three sandwiches and somehow every single one of them tasted like the chef said:
“Let’s make this unforgettable.”
The College Dropout Smash Burger
This smash burger is pure greatness.
The edges are crisp and perfectly seared, the center stays juicy, and the cheese? Melted into every bite like it was meant to be there.
It’s rich, savory, and absolutely addictive — cheesy, flavorful, and satisfying in the way only a truly elite burger can be.
This isn’t the burger you casually eat.
This is the burger you remember.
The kind of burger you talk about later like it was an event.
Chicken Sandwich Royalty
And then the chicken sandwiches showed up and did what they came to do: steal the entire show.
We tried Hot Sweet & Sticky and Harlan Pepper and I’m telling you right now—
these are some of the best chicken sandos in Grand Rapids. Period.
Perfect crunch. Juicy inside. Big, bold flavor.
But it’s the sauces that elevate them into fine-dining-level flavor in street-food form.
Hot Sweet & Sticky is the ultimate balance — that heat + sweetness combo that hits every craving button at once.
Harlan Pepper is layered, bold, and expertly crafted — a sauce that tastes like it took time, skill, and intention.
Each bite is packed, not messy. Powerful, not overwhelming.
It’s flavor with precision. Exquisite.
The Fries
Crispy. Hot. Seasoned to perfection.
Not an afterthought — a main character.
The type of fries you don’t share unless you really love someone.
The Verdict
The Black Napkin is that rare place where you can confidently say: “Order anything. You won’t miss.”
There is genuinely nothing on that menu you wouldn’t like.
We didn’t even finish eating before we were already planning our next visit.
And that’s the sign of a spot that isn’t just good… it’s special.
If there was a rating beyond five diamonds, this is it:
This is Grand Rapids excellence. A must-try. A must-repeat.
I Ordered a triple Le College Dropout ($18). This has 3 smash patties, Grand Cru Cheese, smashed vidalia onions, arugula, peppercorn tomato jam, and herb de provence mayo. This is absolutely the best smash burger I’ve ever had. Normally I prefer thick burgers, however this burger is also one of the best burgers period I’ve ever had. It’s meaty with a great beef taste and the toppings are an excellent boost to the beef. I also got a Hot, Sweet, and Sticky Chicken sandwich ($11). This has tumeric slaw, thai basil mayo, and sweet and spicy chili glaze. The chicken is like a chicken version of a smash patty. Very thin. It is very good, I really like the chili glaze. It is not the best chicken sandwich in Grand Rapids though. Honestly a certain fast food place has a better one, still worthwhile if you don’t eat beef. Lastly the Rust Fries ($5). They are fries with sweet paprika, coriander, garlic, and mustard seasoning. These are some of the best fries I’ve ever had and a very generous portion size too. They perfectly hug that crunchy and chewy line to perfection.
The service was very efficient and very pleasant.
Overall an easy 5 star review. Would I return? Absolutely. Easily one of the best burgers I’ve had. The made from scratch doda are intriguing also
I had the drop out , the most buttery smooth burger I ever had , it is outstanding
The sweet & spicy chicken sandwich is spot on, juicy chicken and the flavor are perfect.
The fries are out of the world , crunchy outside, soft inside and the seasoning was fantastic
Korin & team has built an amazing burger spot for the city of Grandrapids
The service is fast, friendly, and prices are more than fair in my opinion. Another major bonus is the consistency of both the food and service. The experience is fast and fresh every single time. You might have to wait in line, but once you order your food will be out usually within 10 minutes.
And the food… I have tried every burger on the menu at this point and with confidence I can say that they have perfected the smash burger. The versatility of the menu is perfect as it is not too large and not too small. The chicken sandwiches are also both excellent (my girlfriend specifically loves the Hot, Sweet N Sticky).
The fries are ALWAYS fresh and the every single dip and seasoning is excellent. You can blindly choose any flavor on any day, and you won’t be disappointed (once again, I have tried every flavor at this point.
The most underrated aspect of this place is the draft sodas. Especially the season fruit ones. They are perfectly fizzy, tart, fresh, and sweet. My girlfriend stop in regularly just to get the drinks.
This place is firing on all cylinders and if you are in the GR area and haven’t been here, you are doing yourself a disservice.
Staff was incredibly friendly and the food came out quick. This is a definite must try if you’re in the area. Heck even if you’re NOT in the area it’s worth the trip.
We came during mid-afternoon, not a lot of people out and about. The Google reviews sold me, as they usually do.
A chance to try something new & different, we picked this spot vs a bunch of other options for:
-small, fast menu
-to-go
-close to the highway
-4.9 stars
Never could I have imagined the magnificence of the rusty dusty fries omgosh, I could’ve just eaten fries and that’s it. They are crunchy on the outside and perfectly soft in the middle. As soon as I opened the bag I could smell the EVOO and paprika. Such a beautiful, warm scent.
Thankfully I did get a sandwich, le college dropout. My first time having a Michigan smash burger was better than expected. It was a nice change bc you could experience the toppings as well as everything else. Love arugula, will order anything arugula is in!
The single patty was enough for me – I still have half my fries which will re-heat beautifully in the air fryer.
The sodas were fantastic. I drank the whole thing before even considering taking a pic. What my husband and I both noticed is they don’t fill your cup up with ice first. The drink lasted a little while (half my meal) and that’s not usually the case.
Thanks for the wet naps also, those were a lifesaver while getting back onto the road to finish our roadtrip.
