Taco here is served over one corn tortilla, rather than traditional two. They definitely put a generous amount of meat, so they fall apart. No complaints from me here though, I only eat one tortilla on a taco anyways. Definitely ask for fork. You get free fresh chips and salsa, which was pretty good and not too spicy. I ordered horchata as well. for $4.50, I think it is a little overpriced, but they give it to you in a big awesome Inca looking mug. I had left over drink to take it to go.
Definitely, worth a visit if you are in mood for tacos. I will try other entrees next time.
***********If you eat here, be sure to asked for an itemized receipt. I thought the amount seemed high for what we had ordered, one item at $10, another at $11.95 and a soda at $1.50. Somehow our total was almost $32. They automatically added on a 20% tip for a party of 2! They only bring over the handheld credit card machine to your table that only shows a total, not a breakdown of charges. It asks you to add a tip to the total. So not only are you tipping twice, with your second tip, you’re tipping on the additional tip charge as well! On a check around $25, they were getting a tip of almost $12 (after I elected to tip 20% on top of what they snuck in).
When I confronted the server about it, she stated “the computer up front automatically adds it on, but the handheld one doesn’t show it.” I asked for a refund so that I could re-pay.and tip accordingly to the true amount of our order. She pushed one button on the machine and claimed that it was done, so I asked for a receipt showing the reversed charged. She was notably nervous because I know she hadn’t done it. She then refunded it and gave me a receipt. Of course, she only refunded one tip amount. I asked again to have the full amount refunded and she then gave me a total that still included her added tip. After 4 transactions, she finally refunded the correct amount and I paid again and definitely requested receipts for all the transactions.
Needless to say, that was our last time there. If you want more money, raise your prices. Don’t try and rob your customers and play ignorant about it. They also charge you $1.50 for water, absolutely illegal, but another way to rip you off.
The wait staff returned to our table with fresh tortilla chips and a most delicious red salsa. The chips where super fresh and crunchy. We sat waiting for our entrees, I did not finish all the chips and salsa but it was all will power. The salsa was so good and fresh the thought passed through my mind to just sip it; my will power and manners prevailed.
The entrees were large, and looked just like what a photo of the plates would look like in a cook book. The best of it all was that all the ingredients were super fresh. Each ingredient in my chicken enchilada in mole poblano could stand alone for freshness and flavor; together it was amazingly delicious. I was not certain that I could finish the plate in one sitting but truth be told the food was so good that I finished the plate. It was filling and so satisfying. My wife’s coffee was served from a freshly brewed pot. Her cheese flautas, she told me we’re good too.
If you are in Wayne, NJ and want to eat Mexican food you won’t do better then a meal at Tio Pepe’s. The wait staff is friendly and willing to explain the entree on the menu. I will be returning to Tio Pepe’s in the near future.
