The food was good, especially the grilled fish and the chicken. I was looking for some healthier options and it delivered flavor, without being over condimented. The diva noodles were just okay, too soft in my opinion. The waitress never came back after taking the order and I had to get her attention to being the check; there were too many customers per waiter. The counter sitting looks into the backroom and it doesn’t have the same nice ambience as the main room or the regular bar.

Ootoya is always one of my classic go-tos in the area. Price point can be a bit high, but the food is always so fresh and delicious 🙂

Some highlights I’ve had:

— Katsu ju is one of my favourite dishes here. The pork is very tender and flavourful, and while the broth keeps it from being very crispy, it doens’t get soggy at all. The dashi can make the rice a tad salty, but overall it balances quite nicely against the savoury pork.

— Oyako ju is similar and also a great choice. Other than the yummy chicken, the lightly sweet onions paired really nicely with the mix of fried chicken and egg.

— Yosenabe has such a variety of fresh meats and veggies. The pork belly and beef slices were delicious, but do note that the broth has a much fishier (strong mackerel) flavour throughout, if that’s not preferred.

— Tori shio koji was a very tasty option. Portion sizes were a bit small, I thought, but I really like how the lightly salted preparation of the chicken really brought out a lot of the natural flavours of the meat.

— Gindara miso was so yummy. The fish is very soft and fresh — not too heavy or oily — and the miso flavour is a lovely complement to the slightly smoky grilled flavour.

I think the price point does tend to be a tad high. The teishoku sets are often nice because I do like to have rice with these mains, but it can be a bit pricier than I’d have expected. Nonetheless, my meals here are always very delicious, and I will definitely be back soon!

Four of us travelled down to Union Square at 11th street to have lunch at Ootoya. We have been to other Ootoya locations including in Tokyo.
The service was very friendly and professional. Restaurant is nicely decorated with quite a few tables. We were given a nice table near the rear.
I ordered the eel bento box and the others ordered tonkatsu and mackerel boxes. All dishes were nicely presented and delicious. Prices are very reasonable for the lunch menu.
Highly recommended.

Ootoya at Union Square is a solid spot for comforting Japanese food. The menu has a great variety, and the dishes are well-prepared with fresh ingredients. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, making it a nice place to relax over a meal. Service was attentive, though the wait times were a little longer than expected. Overall, delicious food and a pleasant dining experience — worth a visit if you’re in the area.

I love Japanese food so much. What a great find! It was restaurant week so we got to try more! The menu is extensive and the food is great. My hubby has more photos on his phone, but all the flavors just take me back to Japan. Definitely try it!

Ootoya in Union Square is a hidden gem that delivers an authentic taste of Japan right in the heart of NYC. Their new Matcha Parfait that lured us in is definitely a must try! This rich, smooth, and refreshing dessert is like taking a little trip to Japan with each and every bite. The food here is fresh, beautifully prepared, and absolutely delicious. Ootoya’s staffs are warm and friendly making you feel right at home. Their fast service ensures you never have to wait long to enjoy your meal in this cozy and inviting place. Whether you’re here for a quick lunch or a leisurely dinner, Ootoya is a spot you’ll want to come back to again and again.

I had not been to this location for a couple of years and the current waitstaff is simply lovely. They carried a different chair (back and hip issues) to 2 different locations for the person in our party who needed it. They checked on us several times and were just generally good natured and welcoming.
The food was good but one of the vegetable side that came with my set could be improved. I miss the kabocha they used to give you which balanced the saltiness of some of the dishes.
The multi grain rice is as delicious and well cooked as always and so is the chawanmushi. The black bean tea (kuromame cha) is a comforting non caffeinated tea.
The warabi mochi dessert is especially elegant and one of my favorites. It is a Japanese-size portion of small pieces of a somewhat jello like sweet usually made from warabi ko (flour), warabi is a member of the fern family. Divine!

It might be because we were there in the middle of the week for lunch, but it was nice coming to a restaurant that was pretty quiet! Very much Japanese style sets where it’s more for one person rather than sharing. The portion size was great ! We both got the regular size but I’m sure if we had gotten the small, it would have been just as filling.

The only complaint I have was that the rice we had for the salmon oshizushi was a little too warm and too much — fish to salmon ratio was a little off but the salmon itself was delicious.

The toro melted in your mouth

I would have given 5 stars if it wasn’t for the warm rice

I’m not the kind of person who usually writes reviews, but this experience was really disappointing. After eating their so-called 和牛beef bowl, I had an upset stomach for the rest of the day. The dish cost $45, and while Japanese cuisine is usually known for its freshness and natural flavors, their Wagyu beef was heavily salted—probably to cover up the poor quality or even spoiled meat.

Aside from the food, the overall environment and other dishes were far below the standard of other Japanese restaurants. It wasn’t even busy that day, but we still waited quite a while for our food.

Worst of all, the service was terrible. I didn’t catch the name of the waitress, but she was a woman with a sour attitude. After a long wait, she brought us the wrong order. When I kindly pointed it out, she looked at me suspiciously and took the dish away without even a simple apology.

I won’t be going back. I hope my review helps others. This place is expensive, but it’s nowhere near worth the price.

Amazing and tasty food! Albeit did not speak Japanese, the Service was super nice. Atmosphere is great and the interior decor and design is beautiful !

I ordered the Yosenabe as well as the croquette as an appetizer. The main dish was surprisingly small still filling. Our friend ordered the Tonkatsu which was good, but Mama Yoshi Mini Mart has better Tonkatsu IMO.

Would recommend trying this place, but not if you are on a budget, the bill was $40 per person.
