I randomly came across this place craving Texas-style barbecue. There weren’t many people, so the atmosphere was quiet and relaxed. Some of the tables creaked, probably due to age. Overall, the food was tasty, though the brisket was a bit salty.

Max City BBQ – Los Angeles, CA
“Where the meat is dry but your tears are seasoned.”

Let me paint you a picture: My wife, our five kids (yes, FIVE — basically a small army or an entire starting lineup with bench support), and I, all starving like we just got off a survival show, walk into this little BBQ spot tucked on a corner in Eagle Rock. Found it on Google Maps because I typed in “BBQ near me” and didn’t want to end up at a vegan fusion place named something like Smoke-Free & Soulful.

Soon as we stepped in, I got hit in the face by a aroma of wood smoke and barbecue sauce like a smoky angel slapped me and whispered, “You made the right choice.” Smelled like freedom, childhood, and a little bit of cholesterol. 10/10 aroma. My taste buds did the electric slide before we even sat down.

We order the sampler platter, aka “No Meat Left Behind.” They bring it out fast — I’m talking five minutes. That’s not service. That’s a miracle. Felt like I had just summoned a BBQ genie and used all my wishes on a tray of meats.

First victim: The Ribs.
Gorgeous. Picture-perfect. The kind of ribs that would catfish you on Tinder with filtered meat glamour shots. But bite into them and… DRY. Like, hasn’t returned a text in three days dry. Like reading an IKEA manual in a desert dry. You ever bite a rib and hear it whisper “help me”? I did.

Pulled Pork.
Soft, easy to chew, but emotionally empty. Like a hug from a coworker you don’t like. Needed that juicy fat, the kind that makes you stop and reevaluate your life. Instead, it tasted like it had dreams once… and gave up.

Brisket.
Oh boy. Visually? Gorgeous. Smoke ring tight, good structure, bark had me excited. I touched it — firm, respectful. I bit it — dry. DRY. Biblically dry. Like “Moses just parted my sandwich” dry. This brisket came with a side of disappointment. I had to baptize every piece in BBQ sauce just to remember why I was born.

Sausage.
This one hurt. I saw cheese in there. Pepper. Spice. It wanted to be sexy. But then I bit in and it was dry enough to qualify for FEMA assistance. I’ve had gas station sausages with more personality.

Mac & Cheese.
My kids — five brutally honest food critics under 12 — Flavorless and pale, like it had just seen a ghost. I wasn’t here for the mac, so I let it live. Like it saw something terrible in the kitchen and hasn’t spoken since.

Cornbread.
Finally, a win. Crumbly, golden, buttery little chunks of happiness. I had a bite and whispered “this is what church feels like.” It fell apart in your hands, but not in your heart. My wife and I looked at each other and nodded — we found the chosen one.

The Sauce.
Two kinds: “mild” and “spicy.” Spoiler: the spicy one was about as spicy as a dad joke in church. It’s clearly labeled “spicy” for people whose idea of heat is black pepper on eggs. Still, both sauces were great — they came in like paramedics, resuscitating every dry meat like they trained for this.

Service.
Only one lady running the whole show. Cash register, water, food runner — probably managing the smoker in the back telepathically. Give her a raise, a vacation, and a massage. She was hustling and still refilled our water like we ordered a three-course wine pairing.

Atmosphere.
Perfect BBQ joint vibe. Brick walls, wood accents, music that’s low enough to talk but loud enough to cover up your dad jokes. Outdoor patio had a “pull up and chill” vibe. We even overheard a USPS employee spill tea like they were leaking classified info. I didn’t mean to listen, but the gossip was juicier than the brisket.

FINAL THOUGHTS:
Max City BBQ is like a super hot date with bad breath — looks amazing, smells incredible, but gets real dry when it matters most. I wanted to fall in love. I almost did. But I had to sauce up everything like I was giving CPR through a bottle of BBQ love.

Would I come back? Probably. But I’m showing up with a bottle of hot sauce, low expectations, and maybe a hydration pack for the ribs.

I’m not joking when I tell you this place has the best pulled pork I’ve ever tried. It was so juicy, tender and flavor wise it was on point (definitely I WONT be getting heartburns like I usually do with BBQ).
The service was great, everyone super friendly and the sizes are big enough to share. Definitely coming back with some friends

Food was so good! Ordered Hush Puppies and Meat Your Match. Super filling and delish-picked my meats, ribs and pulled pork, got 2 sides which was Mac and cheese and cole slaw. It also came with 2 cornbreads. We wanted to try the key lime pie bars but had no room so we just ordered it to go! Whewww we’ll definitely come here often 🙂 Baylee and the chef had great hospitality. The ambiance was very chill and unique. Very cool vibes!

The ambience of the restaurant matched the food and the service. Ordering was easy and the staff is friendly. Although I had a good experience, I probably won’t come back.

The wait times were long, the temperature of the food is a bit cold, and the quality of some of the items here are questionable.

Especially if your dining in, I expect the food to be hot. Room temperature BBQ that is partially dry is gross and unappetizing. After ordering, the food took about 20 minutes to come out. The vinaigrette for the salad was disgusting, and a few pieces from the salad appeared to have been soaked in water.

Small parking available, street parking too. Small indoor seating with bar and out door seating. Few beers on tap. Service was quick and friendly. Food was hot and delicious. The pulled pork sandwich was great. The ribs and chicken melted off the bone. All in all good experience.

Best BBQ I’ve had, brisket was perfectly flavored and fell apart in mouth. Mac & Cheese is some of the best (anywhere). I Highly recommend this place, I’m religious when it comes to eating here anytime we’re in LA. Staff was very friendly and served us quickly and efficiently.

We frequent this small barbeque joint that serve amazing beef brisket and fall off the bone pork ribs. They ran out of brisket tonight but the chicken and pulled pork are quite good too. One can’t go wrong getting the Mac and cheese, mashed potatoes and collard greens as sides.
The deviled eggs and hush puppies are nicely priced during happy hour.
There were only 2 staff members when we had dinner but the service was polite and efficient.

Got there as the place opened. Friendly and inviting staff. Limited seating inside, but there’s a patio. Limited parking as well. Upon entering the establishment the aromas of the various dishes played like a symphony to my nose, illiciting a corresponding mouth watering reaction. The meal was well worth the short wait. This was my first time at Max City BBQ, but it definitely won’t be my last.

Ordered for pick up and it did not disappoint.
We had the brisket sliders, baby back ribs, corn bread, side of beans and potato salad.

The brisket sliders were by far the best I’ve ever had. It was full of flavor and juicy. I had the mild bbq sauce with it and it added a good tinge of sweetness to the brisket.
The coleslaw also had great flavor (and that says alot from someone who does not like coleslaw).
The potato salad was great, it tasted fresh and was seasoned well.
The cornbread was nice and warm and I personally do not like corn bread but this one tasted great, like home style cornbread.
The Baked beans were okay for me. I think if it didnt have the pork in it, it will taste better to my tastebuds. My boyfriend liked it though. Also, they are not canned from what we can tell.
The baby back ribs were full of great flavor, like that smoked packed goodness. It was also a very generous portion for the full rack (can probably share between 3 or 4 people).

I will definitely be a regular customer at this spot. Definitely check it out.
