What a clever marketing move with the name of the place—it’s actually what first drew us in! Curious and looking to pass some time, we decided to check it out, and I’m glad we did.
From the moment we stepped inside, I was charmed by the interior. The atmosphere is a tasteful blend of mysticism and bohemian flair, with an inviting and artistic vibe. Local artwork lines the walls, and much of it is available for purchase, which adds a nice community touch and makes for unique souvenirs.
Surprisingly, even on a normal weekday when the streets were empty, it was crowded here—the coffee shop was bustling with life. Every indoor table was taken, a testament to the place’s popularity. Fortunately, the courtyard offered plenty of extra seating and a more relaxed environment to enjoy our time.
While I can’t speak for the coffee itself, I went for an affogato—and it was an excellent choice. It was so good, in fact, that I completely forgot to snap a photo before diving in. Another great detail: they collaborate with Ashland Baking Company, located just across the street, so their pastries are always fresh and delicious.
If you’re a coffee enthusiast—or just someone who appreciates a thoughtfully curated space—Black Cat Coffeehouse is definitely worth a visit. It’s more than just a café; it’s an experience that will add something special to your coffeehouse collection.

Looking for a bite to eat post marathon? Check out the Black Cat Cafe. Hungry runners (reg and GF individuals) should order an omelette and side of toast. This would be enough to make a good BYO breakfast sandwich and then some.
The regular breakfast sandwich (made without cheese) was delicious but smaller in size. Don’t forget to add bacon to their regular breakfast sandwich -it’s worth the extra cost. The breakfast sandwich made with cheese came out much fluffier.
The black tea was weak so ask for 2 tea bags to steep.
The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming.
Who wouldn’t want to come here when the poster in the bathroom promotes community – see pic!
The day post marathon it was a 25 min wait for food, so be prepared to sit and wait.
There is LOVE CREAMERY ice cream on site and that is an added benefit for those who are GF (there was one vegan IC choice available today).

Quaint place in older building. We travel extensively and this has to be one of the best breakfasts ever encountered! Everything fresh made. Delicious quiche, plum coffee cake, and huge/tasty breakfast sandwich on foccacia. We would eat here often if in this area.

I love my coffees I get from here at least once a week- however the staff is not always friendly. Normally the staff would greet you upon arriving to order your stuff, not just stare at you and wait to be greeted by me the customer! This happens almost every time I go in! N I tip every time which is going to change! I can’t find a good coffee elsewhere but it’d sure be nice if they could act like they like where they work!

Such a charming find in Ashton! They have fun local art, used books for sale, a beautiful patio, and delicious coffee. The rosemary brown sugar latte was made of dreams. Would highly recommend!

Love this place for a morning or afternoon stop, or both in the same day when I’m in Ashland! My almond milk maple hot latte was fabulous this morning, omelette and veggie hash. Black Cat Salad and Sandeich with my cold brew also fabulous this afternoon. I love getting my fill here! Yum!

We enjoyed our visit to Black Cat. We both had an iced latte. The biggest size Black Cat makes is a 16 ounce coffee and they did not have hazelnut flavor. The atmosphere of Black Cat is really cool!

Favorite food (gluten free options, like piiiiizzzzaaaaa and Korean bowl) and best drinks in Ashland. They use organic sugar!! Calm, clean atmosphere and there’s a rotating local art gallery.
The staff are awesome. Today I asked Erica to please skip the lid on my mocha frappe, so I get a tower of whipped cream and look what I got!!! You’re the best!!

This was actually the best coffee and chocolate croissant I’ve ever had! We had to make a stop on our way home because I love any cat-themed shop. Such a cute place we will definitely be back!

Cute, excellent coffee, clean & lovely barista flair! Must stop!! Staying in town for a couple days, I stopped in three times for a coffee. Fun friendly environment. Great decor. While there I noticed some locals were know by their first name, cool! A lovely place to sit quietly or to enjoy with a few friends. The Lake Superior art on the walls is a nice touch as is the assortment of cards available for sale.
