While I was in Pittsburg, Kansas running errands, I decided to stop for dinner at Chicken Annie’s — and it definitely has a super cool, nostalgic vibe. The décor feels like a throwback to the 70s or early 80s, which gave the place a unique charm right away. I was seated quickly, though it took a few minutes before anyone came by for a drink order.

Even though Chicken Annie’s is known for their chicken, I decided to try something different: a small order of chicken livers and the fried cod dinner, along with their famous German coleslaw and potato salad.

The chicken livers came out fast and looked great, but they were pretty bland and definitely needed hot sauce to give them any flavor. The fried cod followed soon after, and unfortunately, this is where things really went downhill. It was clearly a frozen, pre-breaded style fillet that wasn’t fully cooked in the middle — honestly one of the most disappointing restaurant fish dinners I’ve ever had.

I was hoping the German potato salad and slaw would save the meal, but both were overwhelmed with vinegar to the point that it numbed my palate and made it hard to enjoy anything afterward.

I know Chicken Annie’s is a popular spot, and maybe I should have stuck with what they’re known for — the chicken — but based on what I ordered, I’m not sure I’d return. Everything I tried was pretty rough overall.

Grub Score 3.5/10.0

I had dinner here last week, and it was everything I hope it would be. The chicken was incredibly crispy on the outside, and juicy inside, the sides were all great, and the pie was excellent. I went a bit out of my way on my road trip specifically to eat here, and I’m glad I did.

The best place to be for fried chicken! We had gone there for years since I was a little girl and still continue to go! Totally worth it and if you’re from out of town make a detour! It’s something everyone should experience once in their life

Second visit. I have previously tried the chicken fried chicken and this time the mixed fried chicken. Hopefully I get to visit one other time while I am in town. Plenty of history about how the fried chicken started in town. Everyone working there is nothing but nice and friendly.

Chicken Annies is certainly a great place to stop by and enjoy a great meal. We enjoyed the food we had there. Only complaint was the breast meat was like a 1/4 of a breast and not a full one. Made it like a piece of jerky. So dry and no comparison to the legs or thighs that were perfectly cooked. The German potato salad was a bust for me. The German Cole slaw was a hit for me as I’m part southern. I tasted my wife’s potatoes and gravy and it was great I also felt rushed by our waitress and why? They weren’t busy. Heck I spent almost 100 bucks in this staple in Pittsburgh ks. Maybe a smile and less attitude would be nice . I do live around KC and that would not fly around here . Lose the workout shorts. Put on a smile. Make it a pleasure for everyone . I’m not going to drive 3 hours to be rushed out without a water refill. Customer Service Makes you.

Finally was in the area and stopped by. I like supporting local places. There at 4:00. Decor was just as advertised and described by others. 70’s feel. Clean, some ceiling tiles need replacing. My server, Kaylee (sp) was pleasant and attentive. She was the only server. 14 customers when I was there. Seemed to be 2 cooks and 1 hostess. Onion rings were a huge disappointment. Mostly crumbs on palate thin onions. I saw another order go out after mine that looked much better. Sides were ok. German potato salad was heavy on the vinegar side, which I kinda liked. Green beans were good. Chicken was just ok. Breading is very bland and mine was over fried. Prices were fair for the amount you get. Guess my expectations were pretty high based on historical word of mouth. I can’t recommend going out of your way but if your in the area you could do worse.

Went on a Wednesday night for dinner by myself. Instant welcome, seating and waitress. Not crowded yet several tables occupied. Food served in 10 minutes, hot and delicious.

I was very disappointed with the food at this establishment. First the chicken was under seasoned, the mashed potatoes were made from dehydrated potatoes and you could see the flakes. The water tastes terrible and the potatoes and gravy are made with this water. The green beans have no flavor. The portions are not very big. We got the dinner for two which came with 5 pieces of chicken, 3 sides and onion rings. The onion rings were great and a large portion. This was the best part of the meal. The meal comes with sliced bread, but is served with a vegetable oil spread. If you have a soy allergy you don’t want to eat here. No butter served here. Our server was great and the atmosphere caters to families.
