Prison Brews first opened its doors on April 7, 2008. We are a unique brewpub located on the historic east side of Jefferson City, two blocks from the old Missouri State Penitentiary. The pub occupies an 1895 brick warehouse that was once a blacksmith, creamery, and an electric company. Our nostalgic, relaxed environment soothes your mind while enticing your senses with a diverse food menu and a large selection of handcrafted ales. The large outdoor patio and bocce courts provide a great way to enjoy a beautiful Missouri day. Take a break from your day’s sentence and escape to Prison Brews!
Nostalgic haunt featuring house brews, American grub & bocce in an easygoing, jail-themed setting.

The menu offers a solid variety of unique sandwiches, burgers, wood-fired pizzas, and various entrees, soups/salads and apps. My prison burger which I ordered medium-rare was served hot yet nicely kept pink in the middle. Came with lettuce, tomato, pickle & onion with a side of fries. For a slight upcharge, there are sautéed onions, mushrooms or bacon. I enjoyed the grilled onion on my burger & you choose from four different cheeses. I added extra condiments to help with flavor and compensating for the dry bun.
Prison nachos had good flavor from the diced onion & tomato, sliced jalapeños and cheese sauce. Nacho lovers can choose from chicken, beef or pulled pork for a few dollars more. Salsa and sour cream topped it off.
Another member of our group ordered the Rueben sandwich which was a little thin, but had good flavor.
Our young server was very kind and friendly. She came by to ask about additional beer and wine drinks but didn’t refill our waters. She did great otherwise and our meals came out about 15 minutes after ordering.
The restaurant was in good shape and mostly well cleaned. Bathroom wasn’t super clean, but points for repurposing kegs into urinals and the sink bowls.
Another solid visit to humorous Prison Brews & now I know winters are a time when things are less busy.
The tenderloin sandwich was really good in my opinion. The kids grill cheese though was really heavy and greasy. Daughter was not a fan. My wofe got the chicken Philly and the special sauce is a pesto blend…. not really what we thought it would be. The buffalo chicken dip had good flavor. But was made with whipped cream cheese. That made it really lite and fluffy. Again. Just not our thing. We will try again and try the burgers or pizza.
I also ordered the supreme pizza and my daughter ordered the barbecue brisket pizza they forgot to put the barbecue sauce on her pizza so it had to come out on the side but both pizzas were really delicious. Overall my experience here was quite fantastic and I really encouraged and you when it comes down to grab a flight and try their local bruise that brown they have is some kind of delicious. Overall very happy just wish our server would have even taken the time to ask him if he wanted dessert before putting the check on the table
Our BBQ pizza had multiple huge globs of fat on it and raw dough in the middle. The service was also terrible. I would rather serve a night in the slammer than eat here again.
