We stopped by Onoya Ramen after hiking Diamond Head–and we were *super* hungry, lol. I was craving chicken katsu curry, while my husband and daughter went for ramen.
I can confidently say this is the **best ramen I’ve had so far in the US**. I actually ended up eating more ramen than my own curry. Even though we ordered the spicy version, my 8-year-old loved it. She said it was spicy and needed water–but still kept saying how *really, really good* it was.
The chicken katsu curry was pretty good, but it tasted more Indian-inspired than Japanese to me. I could pick up hints of Indian spices and coconut, and it reminded me a lot of how curry is made in my hometown. While it was flavorful, I was expecting more traditional Japanese curry flavors with potatoes and carrots, which were missing.
Overall, a great post-hike stop with amazing ramen. We’d definitely come back–especially for the ramen!
What makes this place even better is the value for money. The price is incredibly good when considering the generous portion sizes. You definitely get a hearty, satisfying meal without breaking the bank.
The phenomenal customer service also adds significantly to the overall positive experience. The staff were welcoming, attentive, and genuinely seemed to enjoy making sure every diner had a great visit. This high level of hospitality made me feel right at home.
Lastly, the ambiance is the perfect complement to the meal. The cozy atmosphere provides a warm, inviting setting, ideal for a casual lunch or a comforting dinner. The combination of incredible food, fair pricing, excellent service, and a cozy environment makes this restaurant a definite five-star destination that I can’t wait to return to.
Tiny friendly thought though. You guys have the potential to be one of the top spots in town. A little refresh of the walls and paint would honestly transform the vibe. Right now the interior feels a bit tired and it hides how good the place actually is. With a small facelift this place would absolutely shine
The ramen here is one of my favorites on the island. I wouldn’t dare compare it to Japan’s ramen (because, you know, different worlds), but I will say it’s better than the Japan airport ramen I had once . My go-to order is the spicy miso ramen and takoyaki—hits every time.
I live in central Oahu, so making the trek into town means I only get to come here bi-annually, but it’s always worth it. Service is just okay (maybe a .3 deduction), but I’m rounding up because the food deserves five stars.
If you’re craving ramen, I definitely suggest trying it out. Just don’t expect ambiance—expect flavor.
They have an extensive menu and what I really like is that they have vegan options. I am pescatarian but I appreciate the vegan menu. I ordered the vegan tan tan and it was absolutely delicious. It was very flavorful with lots of different textures. I wouldn’t 100% order this again. The Mr had tonkatsu spicy miso and enjoyed it. He also enjoyed the gyoza and chicken karaage.
Service was very good and attentive, but not sure if it was because we were one of the last ones there. There is a small parking lot that because we went around 9pm, had availability.
