Tucked away inside an old mall, El Portal is the place I hesitate to tell people about because I love it and want them to do well, but also still want to be able to get in without hassle.
The atmosphere is what you would expect from a standard midwest mexican restaurant.
The staff are courteous, prompt and always have a smile.
The food is good, the margaritas are delicious and the queso is my favorite.
Most importantly it’s moderately priced, and it isn’t packed to the gills or too loud to carry on a conversation.

Good place to go to have consistently good Mexican food. Large menu with something to please everyone. The mixed drinks are pretty good, they claim the best margarita in Iowa, but that may be debatable.
Good service and food, worth a shot if you want Mexican.

Stopped here for dinner on my way thru town.
I had the Chile Verde. Pork was nice and tender.
Staff was nice and friendly.
The only complaint I have is that my Michalada came served to me in a Styrofoam cup. My brothers Michalada was served to him in an ice cold mug. Its just not the same. I wish I was given the choice to change my drink order seeing that they were out of cold mugs.
The cheese sauce was a big hit at the table.

I ordered a few tacos to be delivered. The tacos I ordered were pictured as authentic Mexican tacos with double corn tortillas. I was brought tacos that were in regular store bought corn taco shells. They were atrocious and inedible. Pictured on the left is what was advertised. Pictured on the right is what I received. The shells were so soggy at the bottom, they all fell apart. Very misleading. If you want good mexican food, go to La Caretta.

Got the mixed fajitas. The meat and veggies were just slopped ontop of the rice and beans. Or mixed into the rice and beans idk it was gross. Hardly any meat and mostly onions. And BLAND! No flavor at all.

The food is… decent. Anywhere else I’ve lived I’d rate it a 2 Star, but being in Iowa with the heavily Americanized Mexican food I’ve found here it was better than the other places I’ve tried. Our waiter was a doll, just a great fellow and super friendly.
Oh, and the Margaritas are amazingly cheap AND very good, highly recommend those!

The chips were warm and fresh and the salsa was really good. Unfortunately the rest of our order was very bland. I ordered the beef steak tip chimichanga, which was basically 2 small burritos with a flavorless sauce. My guest got the Chorri Pollo which was covered in onions and there was no cheese sauce. The rice and refried beans were also disappointing. Our server was more concerned with an extremely rude man behind us and did not stop back at our table until we were ready to leave, leaving us without any refills on our drinks. Very disappointing.
