Ask locals to give me some suggestions of local places to eat that were not food chains, this place was one they suggested for the fries. Going inside we waited for several minutes then were told we could sit ourselves- but nothing was clean to sit at. Then when we sat down they did take our order- which is made to order so it does take awhile- but at least you know it is fresh and hot. The fries were amazing!!!! My husband got the double cheeseburger and said it was really good also. I got the calamari platter with the fries and mac n cheese. Again the fries are definitely what you go to this place for!! The mac and cheese is homemade but I didn’t really care too much for it- calamari was okay just not my taste. Service was slow and the one waitress just acted as if she was on break when it came to seeing that we needed refills.

Yes welcome to one of the best places to eat, great people and the food……..FORGET IT! You have to eat the fries because their seasoning salt is wonderful. You can even buy a jar to take home! Get a burger with those fries. Only Con…. It’s cash or check but no worries, there is an atm!

So, valet at hotel told us about this place when asking for local (dive bars…). “Great burgers and fries”. Was not wrong. Amazing large burger and the fries were fresh, spicy and hot! Evan at the bar was great. Totally will come back if in town again. Totally recommend if looking for local color and atmosphere

TL/DR: This is MUST stop to have something good and uniquely Lynchburg. To say ordering the fries is an amazing thing might be funny other places but… it’s all that.
Why My Rating?
Group Size: We typically come in with 4-8 people with us. Sometimes we have to wait. Seating is limited but it is the place. There are two counters you can sit at and be served as well. It is worth it.
Food: Fries. No… literally, a large basket of fries is worth the drive across town. The seasoning, the ranch, it all plays a part. On top of that, all of the food is simple and excellent. It isn’t fancy but it is great.
Location: On Rivermont Ave. It is an unassuming building that you might pass if you aren’t looking. You’ll have to park on the side of the street prior to or just after the restaurant. Be careful of the bicycle lane.
Staff: Wells Duffy, the owner has owned this for a long time and still is part of the team serving. He was doing that when I was 16 and… well my middle child is 16 now. So… We have ALWAYS had great service here. We love the Cavalier team.
Atmosphere: From the license plates on the ceiling to the random pictures to the team pennants, there is a lot to see. The tables have been carved for decades. A restaurant by day and a local bar at night, the Cavalier is truly an unique Lynchburg gem
Cleanliness: The restaurant is always clean enough. Each table has carvings in it, it is a 100+ year old building. The restrooms are really tiny (like “Hey, you have to see this!” tiny). It’s always been clean enough.
Prices: Very reasonable.
Will We Come Back: Yes, 100% (and I have been for more than 30 years.)
