I love that pizza!!
Hubby got a full rack which was hot, tender, & juicy.
Well done, SnD!
Food: Burn, baby, burn! Unfortunately, looking at some of the other reviews, burnt food is par for the course. I see the response from the owner saying please say something, but there is a big difference between saying something isn’t right and having enough professional fortitude to realize that you, as a cook, have burnt the food, but you send it out to the customer anyways in hopes it doesn’t come back. That’s not good service. My fiancé had ordered a chopped sirloin steak with fries, medium well. When it came out, it looked like a thick square hamburger that had been forgotten in the oven on broil. In other words, it was burnt, and the meat was well past well-done. My fiancé had asked what medium looks like for this kitchen, but the server said, “I don’t know,” so, erring on the side of caution, he went medium well. The meat was flavorless and was pretty much inedible. We threw most of it away. My pizza was good until I gave my fiancé the other half, and we realized that half was completely burnt as well. I got the minestrone, which was more like a chili than a minestrone with meat, beans, and some veggies. Ok at best, but not what I was expecting. The fries were ok, just lacking seasoning. BIG PLUS that pushed for three stars was that their beer was not flat.
Service: We never got her name. I asked what drinks they had, and she looked annoyed because I wasn’t detailed enough. I asked if I was missing part of the menu since the second page was blank, and she said no, also annoyed at that question, but it was a fair question to ask since my fiancé had a full menu (missing the advertisements after investigating). Then, I asked how big the pizzas were she said they come with 6 slices. I rephrased by using my hand and said, but how big are they? So I asked how big the slices were, and she said they were pretty decently sized pizzas, and I would likely take some home (I did). I decided to go with the 9-inch (A little larger than a personal pizza). After we put in our order, she came out with lasagna, but that wasn’t ours. She gave us a ticket that wasn’t ours. While waiting for food, she asked if we wanted another beer. I said I was fine, but my fiancé had his mouth full, and was unable to answer before she walked away. She gave us the wrong ticket and basically grabbed it out of my hand, saying that’s not ours. Also, the bus boy came by to grab our plates, we said thank you, and he just walked away. Staff had zero manners. The lady at the register was awesome and sweet, so two stars.
Atmosphere: I liked the atmosphere until I sat at the table. There was a dirty bucket of water on the table that was moved to a separate table as we were being seated. Cleaner was on the table from the bucket. Could have been worse, so I wiped it up. Tablecloths were torn to shreds, and flies were landing on the food, and it was not a warm day; it was a cool night.I also hate tables right next to the kitchen. It’s an unpleasant smell and unpleasant experience. I would remove that one table if I were the owner because nobody wants to be seated there. Like I said, the ambiance on the left side of the restaurant seemed quaint, but the right side was rickety and not very good. Don’t get me wrong, hole-in-the-wall, non-chain restaurants are some of the best restaurants I have ever been in, but this one was not one of those hidden gems.
Cost: For two burnt meals, a cup of soup and three beers, we came out to 39.00. Not bad for this economy, and the Coors Light on draft was only 1.50 each. Loved that aspect! Typically, with three beers, two meals, and a side, we would be spending a minimum of 50 bucks, so not bad pricing, just wish the rest wasn’t lacking.
Overall: I may come back for a beer, but the food and service were not pleasant, so we may not even come back then. It’s just disappointing because it was spoken of so highly by my colleague.
We ordered 6 pizzas. Well, needless to say my husband said the pizza was ok but sure is not what is was growing up. Frozen pizza put in oven would of been just as good. KIDS, did not like it. Spent 78.00, now down the drain to replace with Papa John’s. MUCH BETTER! FRESH HOT, AND CHEAPER. We will not return to stag and doe. Maybe just a bad night.
Pizza extra thin. NO FLAVOR. Pizza size Large, appears to be a small.
Just an overall bad experience. With prices as high as they are, we just through money down the drain.
I had the lasagna with soup and salad it was delicious and fresh. Service was friendly and attentive.
I will be visiting again to try more menu items. If you’re traveling through or a resident of China Grove I would definitely recommend Stag and Doe over any other eatery in the area.
