There was a special Valentine’s Day menu that consisted of three courses of an appetizer and entrée and a dessert.
We ordered the oysters in the lobster bisque. The oysters were fine, but they were definitely on the smaller side. The bisque, however, tasted straight from the ocean, and it had a very strong pepper taste to it. We both ordered the short rib with polenta. The short rib itself was good. The polenta I wasn’t a fan of, and it came with 2 to 3 stocks of asparagus. The dessert we chose a vanilla crème brûlée, which was a little disappointing because the middle was soupy so it wasn’t fully set.
All in all for the price I don’t think it matches well for the quality of food.
I really hope they iron out the kinks in the kitchen, it took an hour to go from apps to mains for some reason.
We cannot say enough wonderful things about The Commodore Restaurant in Saint Paul, Minnesota. This was our second time using this stunning location for wedding photography, and once again, it exceeded all expectations. The timeless, Gatsby-style elegance and historic charm of the venue provided the perfect backdrop for our special day — the ambience alone is worth the visit!
A very special thank you goes to Lydia, the on-site coordinator, whose professionalism and attention to detail made everything seamless. From our very first interaction, Lydia was incredibly prompt, thorough, and kind — she truly understood our needs and went above and beyond to accommodate us. She made the process of securing the location easy and stress-free, even offering suggestions to help us make the most of the space.
And to top it all off, the team surprised our wedding party with a complimentary bottle of champagne — such a thoughtful and classy touch that made us feel truly celebrated and welcomed.
We wholeheartedly recommend The Commodore to anyone looking for a rich, elegant, and dapper venue for photos or events. Whether it’s your first time or your fifth, this place continues to impress.
Thank you, Commodore, and especially Lydia — you helped make our wedding day unforgettable!
The interior Art Deco atmosphere is really amazing! You do really feel transported back to the 1920s. We also appreciated the menu’s historical touches and references to the era and to Fitzgerald, which add a lot of charm.
Where things fell short for us was with the overall dining experience. While the cocktails themselves were good, the presentation felt more modern than expected given the setting.
Our server was nice and accommodating, but the food took ages to come out (close to an hour), and when it did, it was fairly underwhelming. We ordered the stroganoff and the lamb burger, and whilst neither was bad, both felt rather unremarkable.
On a more subjective note, we also found the dinner menu somewhat limited and a bit unusual in its selection.
Prices are mid to slightly high, which is understandable given the atmosphere, but it made the average food stand out more.
Overall, we’d recommend stopping by for cocktails to enjoy the beautiful 1920s ambiance, but we wouldn’t necessarily suggest committing to dinner.
Must experience at least once!
Despite the challenges, we managed to experience a ok dining experience on an off night. Our waiter, who boasts 26 years of industry experience didn’t seem perform at said level of experience
Our order consisted of:
– Two salads
– One onion soup
– One scallops with butternut squash risotto
– One herb chicken
– One bottle of Cava
– One bottle of Heineken Zero
The initial issue arose when our waiter inaccurately recorded our order. However, I will elaborate on this matter later.
Upon receiving the bottle of Cava, the waiter negligently left it on the table without an ice bucket or chiller. Consequently, the beverage became warm by the time it reached the back half of the bottle.
When my French onion soup arrived, it was disappointingly underwhelming. Unlike other restaurants where the steaming hot cheese cascades over the bowl, this soup lacked the expected presentation. It appeared as if a Cristini had been dropped into a bowl, accompanied by some liquid and cheese. The flavor profile also deviated from my expectations.
The salads, both of which were served in generous portions, were both delicious and healthy.
Our main course, the herb chicken, was cooked to perfection and had a delightful flavor. However, our waiter mistakenly delivered halibut instead of scallops to my wife’s order. Consequently, he returned the halibut and, by the time her new order was served, my food had cooled significantly. Despite this setback, I prioritized enjoying the meal with my wife.
In retrospect, I believe the herb chicken could have been an exceptional dish when served hot.
Regrettably, due to the kitchen’s apparent rush, my wife’s scallops were overcooked, resembling rubber, while the risotto was undercooked.
At this juncture, we concluded our meal and were hesitant to indulge in dessert. However, we did so. We opted for the black forest cake, which may have been an unsuccessful culinary endeavor. It appeared that half of the cake was cooked or baked to the desired level, while the other half was not. Consequently, we decided to end our evening with disappointment in both the service and the meal. Nevertheless, the ambiance of the physical building and its rich history were absolutely stunning and wonderful.
Our hope is that if we visit again in six months, the kitchen issues will have been resolved, and the service will have improved.
