This time around, things felt pretty different. Instead of the conveyor belt, you now scan a QR code at your table to order everything through your phone. Once you place your order, a little “tram” — kind of a mini bullet train — zips your food out to your table. It’s definitely a cool concept, and I can see why people like it, but it also makes the experience feel more automated and less personal. There’s barely any interaction with the staff anymore, which makes it feel a little sterile compared to how it used to be.
As for the food, it’s about what I remember — decent, affordable sushi that’s good for a quick bite but not necessarily something to rave about. The menu still has a wide variety, and prices are reasonable for what you get. Everything came out fresh and on time, and the service (what little there was) was friendly enough.
Overall, Genki Sushi is still a fun, casual place for a simple sushi meal, especially if you’ve never been before and want to try the tram delivery system. But for those who remember the old days with the conveyor belt and color-coded plates, it’s just not quite the same. It’s worth a stop if you’re nearby and craving sushi, but I wouldn’t call it a must-do while visiting Hawaii.
Arrived here and scanned the QR code to join the waitlist at 6pm. We were seated by 6:02, wow fast!
We both placed our order at around 6:05pm. First 2 items of my friend’s order (Spam Nigiri, Deep Fried California) came at 6:10pm. First round of my order (Deep Fried Spicy Roll) came at 6:35pm. Ended up ordering something else (Garlic Salmon Nigiri) at 6:30pm and it came 2 mins after my first order came. My friend ordered an agedashi tofu at 6:30pm and it still did not come…really that long for fried tofu?
Our served talked to us once to seat us and then to get our drink orders. She placed the 2 waters in front of my friend for her to pass to me even though we were seated at the counter. Then we were not checked in with ever again despite my friend and I continuously looking at the “train” to see if our orders were going to be loaded. By 7pm, we got up from our seat to pay our check at the front (because no one came to help us). We let the hostess who helped us checkout know that we were waiting 30 mins for our tofu but did not receive it so we asked to cancel that from the check…and no, she did not say sorry for that (as expected).
I will not be returning to Genki Sushi Kapolei nor recommending this location to anyone. The only plus was that our food tasted as it usually does. However, do not come here. Skip this location and go to another one if you’re dying for Genki Sushi or if you’re craving sushi just go elsewhere to save your time and your money.
Food is not good, oddly expensive, and small portions. Do not get any nigiri – you need a lot of sauce or fried battery to cover up the low quality ingredients. Nothing we got we would ever eat again. Got the seasonal special roll even though it didn’t say what’s in it. Did not taste good.
Our table had sticky stuff on the table and menus. Our bowls had bleach-smelling liquid in them, making the ginger and wasabi inedible. Conveyor belt had all sorts of stuff on it – crumbs, fries, etc.
Servers aren’t happy and whisper, you can barely hear them over the loud upbeat Christmas music. Our guy filled our waters twice before our food came out but not after that.
Watch your ordering for errors. My husband ordered on his phone and then I did the same. But when I submitted it, it gave me a pop up notification with no words, I could only press OK. It wasn’t showing in our cart on either phone so I submitted again. Then it showed up twice. Someone did finally come when we used the call button, a friendly guy that said he’d let the kitchen know the order was doubled. But the second order started coming out on the conveyor. Called someone over again and I guess they fixed it then.
Didn’t stay long enough to need to use the bathroom so don’t have info on it.
There are two employees at the front desk both of them see me and eventually two other parties coming in behind me.
They make eye contact I am standing right in front of them and was completely ignored. And so were the parties that came in after me.
I get they might not be the host at the podium they have off to the side and it may not be their job to seat people.
But you should at least acknowledge the customer say hello someone will be with you shortly.
Nothing they just look at you while you stand there. I have worked customer service jobs and it’s basic work knowledge to know to greet customers.
That’s basic training! Service was also poor considering ordering is done with your phone and majority of food comes to you via the train.
The bullet trains that they come out on had me giggling every time something came out. It’s a good form of entertainment while you eat.
❤️ Our server this evening was the fabulous TIA, she provided us with our best experience ever. She was so thoughtful and kind. Her personality was the best. She took good care of us and check up on us. I even had to ask if she was the manager! Her introduction to us was what really set the tone for our evening. You can certainly tell she loves her job and is very good at it. Thank you Tia we had a good time!
Still the best!
