I was delighted with the vibe when we walked in. We were seated at a table in the back room, where the bar was located. I felt like I had walked right into Savannah, Georgia! The room was adjacent and open to the outdoor seating area where live music was playing.
I ordered shrimp and grits, my usual and favorite southern cuisine. I have tried shrimp and grits in every southern city I’ve visited and at THE most famous southern/soul food restaurant in NY, Sylvia’s, located in Harlem. Let me tell you, none compared to Sylvia’s…until I had the shrimp and grits at HATTIE’S!!
My friend and I decided to try the beignet. We were NOT disappointed!
I’m looking forward to my next visit to Hattie’s to continue exploring their southern-food offerings.
The drinks were delicious and well worth it.
The deviled eggs were good but I felt they needed a punch of flavor. Felt a bit subdued.
The chicken sandwich left much to be desired. The chicken was a bit dry and it wasn’t all white meat. Perhaps it was thigh?
The cheese wasn’t entirely melted and a bit cold and I asked for bacon on the sandwich and never got it. The home fries were pretty good however.
My wife did really enjoy the chicken and waffles. She said it was very crunchy and had some flavor as well.
The server made a point to learn and call us by our names, the food was generous and comforting, and the interior felt homey; unchanged from days past.
The fried chicken was a masterclass in the use of black pepper. The Southern sides were exactly as they should be. Everything in its place, just so, to deliver that too-often gone hospitality.
I started with the pimento cheese and toast points, which were tasty though the toast was conventional. For my main course, I had the four pieces of fried chicken and grits. The fried chicken was crispy, crunchy, and juicy. My husband enjoyed the special veggie scramble.
The service was friendly but not too attentive. I was never offered a refill of coffee. The atmosphere is casual and homey, perfect for a relaxed meal. Overall, Hattie’s provided a decent dining experience, and we don’t regret stopping here on a road trip. Highly recommended for anyone in the area!
