CASH ONLY. Small town diner with good food. .. hotcakes were nicely flavored. Crab cake was tasty without a bunch of filler. Ram skillet was decent.

Basic diner with great service right in town. Breakfast was good, really enjoyed the chicken and waffles. Western omelette was OK, would have liked more veggies. Our pancakes came out dry and not fluffy. Cash only.

We walked in and it was busy for the holiday weekend but staff was super friendly and sat us shortly after we walked in. It’s an older place but a true gem and the food is GREAT. My husband and I are visiting from out of town and read the reviews so decided to stop by and it did not disappoint! The biscuit and sausage gravy is heavenly. The pancakes were bigger than my husband’s head. You will leave here full. All of this was only $24, a steal to us! If we visit Sheperdstown again we will be back!

Ah, Betty’s! As a kid, I loved Bob Evans. But decades later Bob Evans is not the Bob Evans I remember. On a recent sentimental journey to W Virginia, I gave very little thought to having breakfast at BE’s. My wife and decided to check out Shepherdstown, and Betty’s was exactly the nostalgic breakfast diner we were hoping to find. The atmosphere was perfect small town West Virginia, Circa 1974, complete with Kitty Wells belting out a country tune over the “wireless.” The service was fast, attentive, and super friendly, even though we’re definitely “northerners.” The food? Again, southern perfection! From house-maid sausage gravy and fresh biscuits, to generously portioned sausage patties and bigger-than-your-plate hotcakes, this is where you need to be to stoke those southern-living memories. Well done, Betty’s, you’re part of the reason we’ll be back to West Virginia asap!

I really wanted to like Betty’s — it’s a charming, old-school spot and one of the few breakfast diners in Shepherdstown — but the experience fell flat.

Service was incredibly slow. A couple who arrived at the exact same time I did received their food, ate, and left before my meal even made it to the table. There was no communication or acknowledgment from the staff, just a long, awkward wait.

What really concerned me, though, was that dishes were being washed right in front of everyone behind the counter by hand. The water didn’t look anywhere near hot enough to properly sanitize, and I didn’t see any sanitizing solution being used — just regular dish soap. In a restaurant setting, that’s worrisome and honestly made me nervous about getting sick.

When the food finally came, it was bland and forgettable. Nothing terrible, but definitely not memorable — the kind of breakfast that feels more like an obligation than a treat. Betty’s seems to be the beneficiary of being one of the only breakfast options in town rather than excelling on its own merits.

Also, they’re cash only, which feels outdated in 2025. There’s an ATM inside, but it hits you with a $2.75 fee — a nice little side profit for them, I’m sure.

Overall, between the slow service, questionable sanitation setup, and underwhelming food, I left disappointed and doubtful I’d return.

Strolled in here with my party of three and Cara and the crew were super attentive and friendly. She spoiled me(I had forgotten my southern life what small town and southern hospitality was like)with southern hospitality and politeness. She came back and checked on my party, always refilling our beverages. She gave us ample time to decide and order. I’ll definitely be back again. Thanks a bunch Betty’s restaurant crew!!

We were visiting my wife’s uncle who is the catholic priest here in Shepardstown and he recommended this place for breakfast. We were so glad he did because this place was amazing. We loved the old school diner feel and the waitresses and staff were so nice and friendly! They gave our little ones crayons to draw on and had a high chair waiting for us without even asking. The food was delicious as we about had one of everything and the prices were cheap as you were gonna get. Highly recommend eating here and will definitely be back next time we visit!

We came for breakfast. My husband had told pur server when he was ready to order he would put his menu down so they wouldn’t have to keep checking. But she came back anyway before he was ready and we felt very rushed to order like it was an inconvenience for her to give us more time. My husband had a Blueberry pancake and a plain one with chipped beef gravy and a sausage patty. I got Blueberry pancakes and a Sausage patty. The sausage is fresh and cokes from a local butcher so it was pretty good. Bland and lean but not the fake meat you usually get. We were very disappointed in the pancakes though. The batter they use has no flavor. The blueberries were good but the pancakes themselves, not so much. We got a cup of milk with our meal and it was going sour. It just didn’t taste right. We were really looking forward to coming here and were honestly let down. Especially for the prices.

What else is there to say that hasn’t been said in other reviews. Overall it took a hour to eat. The person mentioning the dishes being washed in tepid water was very correct . I don’t know how the health department hasn’t cracked down on that. No paper towels in the bathrooms. The food was very flavor free and just wasn’t what was expected. I for one have never seen chopped up French fries used as home potatoes. Those were dry too. I don’t often write reviews but here I am. Also this was clearly the most disorganized staff I have ever had the pleasure of witnessing.

It was my first visit and I was so pleased. I had coffee and the hometown breakfast with sausage. I splurged to get the sausage gravy on my home fries and it was delicious. I’m always a little nervous to try gravy outside the South but Betty’s can do no wrong here. Bonus: they have the mixed fruit jelly tubs! Coffee was fresh and hot. Service was attentive despite being at full-house capacity. They’re making stuff to order so don’t plan to get in and out too quickly. But they brought my order in a reasonable amount of time and left the ticket so I didn’t have to ask for it.

There are some steps to get in, and it’s cash only with an ATM inside.

I look forward to bringing my out-of-town friends in when they visit!
