The food was good but some of them were lacking in flavor – like the sweets – they had a dish called mango mousse , the entire table found it too sweet, it was like mango pulp mixed with sooji and milk. Nothing like a mango mousse,
The food was refilled often , and it had chaat , which I love. We did miss sev as the topping but it had the chutneys, papdi and popped rice to make bhel and yoghurt to make papdi chaat.
Good options for vegetarian and non vegetarian folks. The table had both and enjoyed the options.
I don’t know if I’d be back, it just feels expensive at $25/person (we paid $35 with taxes mandatory service fees and tips) to even eat out anymore, so I would have more expectations for a buffet if it’s that rate, for me.
But if you enjoy trying out Indian food, this is a good place. Nothing was spicy and things were tasty.
Parking was easy on the street
When you sit down the waiter brings papadam with two sauces. For dinner we ordered Chicken Tikka, and Lamb Rogan Josh. The Chicken Tikka is on the appetizer menu but we order it as a main course. It is boneless white meat done in the tandoor, served sizzling on a hot platter with a little onion, tomato and cucumber, dressed with a side order of Naan.
The Lamb comes with rice. We ask for medium heat, but they will make it mild or spicy. Wine is a generous pour, and a beer is served with a frosty glass, very nice. The dining room is well staffed with pleasant people quick to take the order, keeping water glasses filled, and bringing extra rice. In all, it is a very pleasant dining experience, in fact close to fine dining.
The restaurant is suitable for vegetarians, even vegan dinners, and children also. The children have fun with the fancy puffed bread. The space is handicapped accessible. They are busy with take out, and the bar is hopping, too. There’s lots of free parking.
Also if you can’t find street parking in front of the restaurant, there is a public lot right behind it.
We were seated at a front table where we found dirty silverware and a dirty table cloth. Of the 5 spot lights in the front window were we were seated, one was flickering, one was burnt out, one was missing, and two were actually working. This would take minutes to fix, but instead it just looks shabby. Here we also found half the wall of lights out which, again, gives the place a run down feeling.
We had high hopes the food was still as good it was the last time we dined there. We were wrong. The food came out quickly (the restaurant was mostly empty) and the lamb kebabs and dhal were as good as we had hoped, but the saag paneer was luke warm at best, half the garlic naan pieces had no garlic or butter, and the chicken curry dish was both not hot and had an off taste.
The one positive part of this experience was the service. Everyone was friendly and attentive. Issues like the dirty silverware and table cloth were addressed quickly as was the sub par food items I mentioned above. Masala Art has always had good and hard working staff at the front of the house and thankfully that hasn’t changed. As for the rest of it, they have a lot of work to do to bring this place back to its former glory. I truly hope management or ownership reads this and takes a look around at what I’m talking about.
