Tucked away in a vibrant Tempe strip mall (just a quick hop from Phoenix proper), The Original Hoagie Shop is a no-frills powerhouse of sandwich sorcery.
That colorful wall mural? It’s the perfect teaser for the feast ahead – those massive hoagie panels had my mouth watering before I even sat down. The spot exudes old-school charm with its green-and-orange accents, cozy booths, and the faint sizzle from the grill that screams “fresh-made magic.”
I dove into the classic Philly Cheesesteak, piled high with thinly sliced ribeye, gooey provolone, and caramelized onions on a soft-yet-chewy Amoroso-style roll (a rarity in AZ!). Juicy, flavorful, and not greasy – it transported me straight to South Street. My buddy grabbed the Italian Hoagie, loaded with Genoa salami, capicola, prosciutto, lettuce, tomato, onion, oil, and vinegar. The meats were premium, the toppings crisp, and that tangy kick? Chef’s kiss. Portions are generous; we split fries (crispy, seasoned perfection) and still had leftovers.
Service is the real MVP – the owner chatted us up like family, recommending tweaks based on our tastes. Quick, friendly, and zero upselling. Prices? A steal – our feast for two, with drinks, clocked under $25. Pro tip: Go early; lines build fast for a reason.
If you’re craving authentic East Coast hoagies without the flight, this is your spot. 10/10, will evangelize to every Phoenician I know.
Oh…I had the 8 Inch Philly Cheese Steak wonderful and felt full afterwards!
I would highly recommend. Let’s keep these Family owned restaurants and business!
Outside of the delicious food, what also impressed me was watching one of the employees (assuming an owner) help carry the food to a customer’s table. They took care and pride in how they treat their customers and present their food.
The menu was located on a huge screen TV and was easy to read. The decor of the shop was nothing to write home about. I didn’t see a public restroom for use, but who cares! My focus was on their food!!
Way to go guys!
