From the minds behind ChurchKey, The Sovereign, The Grand Delancey & Bluejacket (among others), Shelter features many of the key elements that one would expect from an NRG beer bar: 50 taps (including 5 side-pull taps to perfectly dispense lagers), a temperature-controlled system, rigorous line cleaning, and extensive glassware. With near frenetic-rotation, Beverage Director Greg Engert will pour close to 1,000 different beers annually on draft. What makes Shelter different from NRG’s other beer bars is its focus on low-abv selections – up to 50% of Shelter’s list clocks in below 5% abv. Shelter also features 2 cask engines dispensing real ale and cider. The space at The Roost includes a beer garden, in addition to indoor seating within the

Amazing food, world-class beer and great service. It doesn’t get any better than this in DC, and, to be honest, on the entire East Coast. It’s so great that it’s hard for me to eat/drink elsewhere. NRG just does it better than everyone else, from the top down to the amazing staff pouring/serving/interacting with customers. Great people make this a great spot for a quick beer, or a long meal experience with friends.

Admittedly, when I read that Shelter was a product of the folks behind Churchkey and the Sovereign, I knew I had to pay a visit. Fan of EITHER of those mighty fine establishments (or of beer in general)? Seek Shelter.

Opening with a “limited” selection of draft/cask and cans/bottles for now, you might still find yourself fumbling over which beer(s) to order much like I did. “Taster” sized glasses are also an option provided you’re unsure of that sour you’d heard about. Also-also, Shelter has compostable cups for to-go beers which will come in handy especially if you’re getting takeout from Red Apron or Hi/Fi.

Ordering comes way of tabletop QR code scan to access The Roost menu. There you’ll find Shelter’s as well as additional drink options (think wine, cocktails and non-alcoholic) and food too. Don’t worry, it doesn’t read Cheesecake Factory style by any means but you’ll be hard pressed to have just “a drink” after viewing all that’s available.

Service was standout and a big takeaway from my visit. Chelsea was our table’s beer whisperer for the evening, sharing both informed suggestions and opinionated alternatives with each order. This was per my request, of course, and naturally made the visit memorable.

Like I said before, seek Shelter…

Shelter is from the creators of Churchkey, a popular beer spot in Northwest D.C. Shelter is on the bottom floor of a new apartment building in Hill East Southeast and part of a culinary clubhouse called The Roost. Shelter has a large indoor space with a long bar and a large outdoor patio with all types of seating. They serve a rotating list of craft beers, sour ales and ciders. Because of their diverse menu, they cater to all types of preferences. I love sour ale and they have two on tap weekly. Since it’s part of The Roost, you can order any food item from the other shops from tacos to burgers to sushi.

We stopped in just passing through on our way to the airport and were impressed by the wide beer selections. I tried a Kölsch beer from Halfway Crooks Brewery (based off staff recommendation) and loved it!
