I had a large group order for a gathering recently and it was requested for a 5:45 pick-up, so pretty soon after they open in the PM. They were on top of it! They were prompt, great service and the food was amazing. It made the event. So grateful this restaurant is here in our community.

We had fantastic experience at Sushiya. Top notch customer service. Very close to the flavor we had in Japan. Highly recommend

As Seattle natives, we know how tough it is to find fresh seafood in the Midwest. Most places here are just okay, but Sushiya? It’s a total standout. Their sashimi is hands down the best in the area—fresh, clean, and beautifully presented every single time.
I PROMISE YOU—order the hamachi kama!!! You will not regret it. It’s one of the only things I’ve had in Iowa that tastes close to the best I’ve had in Seattle, if not better, depending on the fish they have in stock.
The restaurant is owned by Taiwanese owners, and they’ve nailed the perfect mix of authentic Japanese cuisine with a little Taiwanese flair. I’m obsessed with their Taiwanese chicken—it’s crispy, flavorful, and so addictive. The sashimi platters are a must-try, and their rolls are just as great, balancing creativity with traditional flavors. On cold Iowa days, their hot sake is my go-to—it’s warm, comforting, and pairs perfectly with their menu.
The ambiance is cozy but modern, and you can even watch the sushi chef in action, which makes it feel extra special. Plus, it’s close to a cute man-made pond where you can take a nice walk after your meal. Parking is easy too, which is always a win.
Service is usually fantastic. There’s one waitress who’s a friend of the owner, and she’s the absolute best—she remembers our orders, is super sweet, and knows just when to check in. That said, when they’re busy, the service can slow down a bit, but it’s totally understandable for a small restaurant.
Sushiya has become our go-to spot when we’re craving authentic Japanese food and fresh seafood. It’s a rare gem in the Midwest, and I’d happily brave an Iowa winter just for their sashimi and hot sake. Highly recommend—just be ready to wait a little during peak hours, but trust me, it’s worth it!

Incredible sushi and service! Our server was really great and offered some really good suggestions to ramp up our sushi order that we went with and were glad we did! Some shining stars were the honey roll, string salad, mushroom roll, and agedashi tofu, though everything was delicious. We really love how expansive the veggie roll selection is and how reasonable the pricing is. The space is small which makes it feel really cozy and it was fun watching the chefs assemble sushi rolls at the bar. You can tell there’s a lot of pride and care taken by the owner. We saw him walking around and checking in on food prep which was nice to see. This place is definitely loved as it was already pretty full when we got there around 5!

Appetizers were really good! Tried the Taiwanese Crispy chicken and takoyaki, both were delicious. Rolls were very good. Singapore noodles were very tasty, had the curry flavor on point. The Katsu Don has a very good Japanese fish sauce.
Price was reasonable, lots of food.

Incredible sushi and tender shumai. I’d skip the teriyaki chicken if I were you. The flavor was light and the sauce thin. The seating was rather cramped due to a packed restaurant. You can sit at the bar and watch the sushi chefs perfect their craft or simply sit at a table nearby. Word to the wise, the kids bento box is rather large and not exactly finger food friendly with the exception of the orange slices and sushi.

Sushiya has been our favorite sushi restaurant in Iowa City area. We have been visiting this place regularly for the last 3 years, and never had a bad experience. We only eat sushi, and didn’t try other options though (because it is so good!).

This is my go-to sushi place! They always have really delicious food and the staff is always super nice. I definitely recommend the Philadelphia roll and the salmon roll. Their takeout is just as good as eating in person

So very glad we ate here while we were in town! We started with the shrimp dumplings. We had 6 dumplings and they were delicious cooked perfectly …and just the right amount of shrimp and seasoning! My wife had the Manhattan …and I had the Happy Eel. Both were wonderful. The Manhattan was just slightly better because it had a great depth of flavor. My favorite, though, was the Unagi(?). This was the best I have ever had. ( i have tried MANY in the past) The eel piece was huge! The sushi rice was legit and perfectly cooked. Great ambiance and good service. We will be back as often as we can.

Wonderful food, service and beautiful presentation!
Staff was so friendly. Such a gem of a place. We were dressed very casual on a Saturday afternoon but no worries.
We sat at the counter. I highly recommend it so you can watch them prepare their beautiful creations.
