Shady Island has been here for decades. I haven’t eaten here in over 5 years, and I’m pleasantly surprised.
They have the wharf food like calamari, classic fish and chips, which were crispy and tender. But they also have Thai food! I only took a photo of the red curry while others had pad Thai, yellow and green curry. They were all tasty.

My second time here and now my new Fish & Chips place to go in Steveston. I had the one piece halibut meal….. definitely enough for this senior….. fish was nicely done with not too much batter and the home-style fries were excellent. Tartar sauce was also very good. If I were to suggest anything— I could have used a bit more coleslaw.

The food prices lean touristy, but the wine list? Surprisingly down-to-earth. We ordered a bottle of Sumac Ridge Gewürztraminer and were pleasantly shocked by how community-friendly the pricing was.
The menu is an interesting mix—burgers and fish and chips on one side, and authentic Thai dishes on the other. Turns out, the original owner was a Thai woman, and the new owner (who came on board right before COVID) decided to keep the Thai section instead of going fully western. Smart move, especially in a neighbourhood already filled with seafood and Japanese spots.
Our server was super friendly and patient, even with our indecisive ordering.
Here’s what we had:
• Chowder soup (cup)
Somewhere between New England and Manhattan, this chowder was creamy and tomatoey but not quite enough of either to stand out. Confused but edible.
• Thai spicy clams
Solid dish. Flavourful, nicely balanced, and the broth made us want to grab a spoon.
• Prawn pad Thai
Definitely on the sweet and acidic side, no real wok aroma or char. Meh… it lacked the depth that makes a great pad Thai memorable.
• Fisherman’s pot
Tasted like a proper $40 seafood pot without the fancy markup. Lots of variety, rich broth, approachable and well portioned.
• Sumac Ridge Gewürztraminer (bottle)
Refreshing, light, buttery and did not break the bank. A great pairing for seafood.

Surprised ratings are not higher. We enjoyed everything we ordered. The fish and chips was very good size, not greasy, fish was very tasty. Coleslaw excellent. Salmon risotto delicious! Our waitress Alyssa was friendly, speedy and so cheerful! It was very busy on the last long weekend of the summer but we had an excellent experience and will visit again.

We stumbled across while looking for something to eat was not disappointed at all! Amazing atmosphere come on a day when a band is playing 100% worth it.we went on the patio it had heaters so we were nice and cozy with a amazing seaside view. The food was amazing too! I had a butternut squash with prawns it was so! freaking! delicious! Our server Bevan was awesome too we got our food fast and super quick drinks and refills dispite being outside so thanks Bevan you were great! All in all a 10/10 experience can’t recommend enough as a out of towner if you are in on a long weekend definitely check this place out.

The restaurant feels confused. It was my first time eating at Shady Island Seafood Bar and Grill and to my surprise I learned that it served Thai food. I decided to order the Thai food because I was worried that the rest of the menu was likely not as good with such contrasting food items. The Thai food was good but I was disappointed that a seafood bar and grill didn’t focus more on the seafood bar. The oyster bar was empty and the menu is heavily fried. I feel the restaurant relies on the location rather than the food and with the prices it should be better.
