What would we do without our neighborhood restaurants? They might not have famous chefs or national profiles, but they get our repeat business, week in and week out. They keep us comfortable and feed us when we don’t feel like feeding ourselves. And they say something about the neighborhoods in which they are situated, sum them up in some true way. The Abbey has long been one of my favorite restaurants in Cambridge—especially for solo dining or spontaneous celebrations with close friends. This might be my sixth visit.
I really like the atmosphere here. The lighting is dim, creating a sense of privacy and relaxation, and the dark green glow from the bar adds a slightly mysterious, cozy feeling. I also love how casual and welcoming the seating is—they usually let people sit whatever they like (you can also walk in and grab a seat) , which truly makes it feel like home. I’ve noticed many regulars here as well. This was my first time visiting on a Friday night, and it felt lively and vibrant. I had lovely chat with other solo diners and watched skiing from their TV together.
I had the salmon risotto this time. The salmon was seared perfectly, with a thin, crispy skin and tender, juicy flesh. The skin is easy to be sliced cleanly without cracking. The risotto was flavored with lemongrass and coconut milk, giving it a subtle Southeast Asian, tropical note. It was very creamy—slightly oily, but acceptable. The snap peas were a great balance: crisp, fresh, and juicy. I only wished there had been a few more of them.
I’ve tried many dishes here, and almost everything has been excellent. Some favorites include the fries, Brussels sprout salad (with avocado and egg), mussels, and the bison Bolognese. The menu offers a great range—from classic comfort food like fries, wings, burgers, and pizza, to lighter salads with interesting ingredients, as well as more refined seafood and meat dishes. They also offer a variety of sides if you’re just looking for a small bite or want to add something extra. It’s easy to find something satisfying here whatever mood you have.

Great atmosphere and food; prices weren’t cheap by any means but weren’t unreasonable. The service was simply spectacular though, enough that even if the food wasn’t as good as it is, I would have still given 5 stars.

Cozy, local bar with great appetizers and kind servers. Never had a bad time here. Cocktails were alright, but if you stick with the classics (like an Irish Coffee) or a beer, you’ll be good.

Here’s a revieWe had a decent meal at The Abby. The food itself was good, but we had a small issue with the salad. I had asked to substitute the fries for a salad, and while I appreciated the option, it came already dressed. I personally liked the dressing, but I usually prefer my salads without it, and would have appreciated being asked. Unfortunately, my partner didn’t like the dressing at all and ended up not eating her salad. A small thing, but it would’ve made a difference if they had checked with us first.

My wife and I live close by and really love this place. Great food (including delicious daily specials), a very nice rotating selection of draft beers, and reasonably priced mocktails. The kitchen closes late, which is also a big plus. What we most love, however, is the atmosphere. The staff has always been very welcoming and nice to us. In fact, we had to evacuate our building quite late after a fire broke out a few weeks ago and they kindly offered to shelter us until we found somewhere to spend the night. No wonder why we keep coming back 🙂

Great local bar with solid drinks and great food.

Among the bars near Harvard Square, Abbey is my first pick for a laid-back drink on a patio. It’s just far enough from the noise, with reasonably priced drinks and, best of all, seriously good food. While the menu doesn’t push creative boundaries, they do the American bar comfort food done right.

Small bites like the Bacon Deviled Eggs and Pulled Pork Egg Rolls were tasty, but the entrée department was where Abbey excelled. Both the Salmon and Cod were outstanding—honestly, some of the best entrées I’ve had at a bar in recent memory. Each had an impeccable texture, almost as if delicately poached. The Salmon, paired with heirloom tomato risotto and a basil pesto vinaigrette, had a pleasant touch of acidity. Meanwhile, the Cod came with a potato scallion pancake, perfectly crisped and soaked in a shallot cream sauce, which added just the right crunch and salty punch to elevate the dish beautifully.

The crowd at The Abbey skews a bit older compared to some of the livelier Harvard Square bars, but it’s worth a visit f you’re after a more laid-back, cozy bar vibe. It’s popular among the locals, so if you’re hoping to snag a patio seat, I’d recommend going during off-peak hours.

Black pepper gnocchi was really good, just a tad too salty. But I could tell it was really nicely made, good ingredients and lots of flavour. I would definitely recommend (if they would tone down the saltiness by a bit). The fries were really nice, crispy, salted well, and savoury. The presentation of the food was great, no complaints and the food looked delicious. The service was great too: food came on time, server always checked up on us, even though they didn’t have sparkling lemonade on the menu, they still made it for us when we asked. Dessert was a warm cookie with ice cream and that was delicious, we ate it all before I even got to take a photo. A little bit on the pricier side here, but it’s Cambridge/Boston, so pretty typical. Would I come here again? Food-wise, yes. If I’m paying for the meal, no. It’s expensive.
