I ordered take-out close to closing time, around 9:25pm, and arrived around 9:50. They were still taking new walk in takeout orders at that time, so I didn’t expect the kitchen to be shutting down yet. My chicken tikka masala was good, but the butter chicken was made with shredded tandoori-style chicken instead of cubed pieces like most places, which made it drier and less flavorful than expected. My garlic naan was good too.
The gulab jamun was a good value, three pieces for about $4, but the syrup tasted more like the packaged store versions and wasn’t the bright red syrup I’m used to from other restaurants.
Service was polite, but my pickup order sat cooling on the counter while I waited behind a group placing a new order. Overall an okay experience, but not one I’d go out of my way to repeat.

I love this restaurant! I used to go there all the time when I still lived over in Middletown. It is definitely worth a 30 minute drive now that I live across the river. The clay oven is the best family owned Indian restaurant ever! Definitely worth it!!

We’ve only order to go through doordash or uber vs eating in, but every meal has been amazing. Chicken tikka masala is always fantastic, and we’ll always switch up the second dish and so fa have tried Aloo gobi, saag paneer, bhindi masala and everything has been delicious. Don’t forget to get garlic naan and Mango lassi! Our favorite in Louisville!

Loved everything about this restaurant! The vibes were really nice, and the tables were beautifully set. Our waiter was kind and checked in on us regularly. Our food was amazing! I particularly loved the rosemary naan, which was as beautiful as it was tasty, and the mango lassi. I look forward to returning here in the future to try more food!

We went in for the lunch buffet, arriving a few minutes past 2:00. The door reads Lunch Buffet 11:00-2:30. The food was great, full of flavor and the staff was very pleasant. At 2:15 the mood changed from a pleasant lunch to an uncomfortable race to eat. They brought the check before we finished our first plate. At 2:20 we were told if we wanted to get dessert to go get it and set it aside on our table. At 2:25 a staff member said we had 5 minutes to get our food. Then we were ignored while they removed all the food from the buffet and started cleaning up. When I did get someone’s attention to get drink refills they bought them in to-go cups! We finished our food quickly and very uncomfortably while the staff watched us eat. I was extremely disappointed with the whole experience, especially after reading so many positive reviews. This was our first visit, and possibly our last, as we aren’t sure if we will be coming back. If we do, it definitely will be before 2:00 so we have time to eat peacefully!!

Best Indian restaurant I’ve been to. My husband had lamb rogan josh and I had chicken tikka masala. The portions were perfect, the rice cooked perfectly and the garlic naan bread was to die for!
You can chose your own heat levels.
It is also VERY affordable. New favorite place.

Clay Oven isn’t the closest Indian restaurant to home, but it’s become our favorite. Located, rather unassumedly, in a retail strip area on Shelbybille Rd in Middletown, Clay Oven is more than you expect when you walk in.
We’ve never had to wait to get seated at Clay Oven, even though we always visit on Friday evenings. The interior is warm and welcoming, with all of the tables set nicely with a clean, white tablecloth, red cloth napkins, and pristine water glasses. The décor is very Indian without being overdone. The background music is at a comfortably low volume and doesn’t require talking over.
Clay Oven’s menu is pretty sizable and quite varied. In all our visits I’ve only ever ordered from the Indo-Chinese Specialties section, and never been disappointed. The Paneer Chili was my favorite (who knew cheese could be so flavourful?), the Chicken Mo-Mo, and the Jungle Kebobs have been my favorite. Each dish (not all at the same time…these were different visits) served hot and fresh. There’s something about the smell of Indian food that is just amazing.
Their Garlic Naan? INCREDIBLE!
The staff has always been friendly and helpful. The prices are very reasonable and the food delivery times have always been very timely.
Clay Oven is a pretty laid-back, genuine Indian restaurant that you can’t go wrong with.
