Traktir is a Russian restaurant in the city of Santa Monica. If you want to try something new this is the place to be. They’re known for their special vodka flavors. The food is excellent all around. They have a variety of combinations dishes. Recommend for everyone looking for something different.

Just Oh my, is this place great. First, it has a great deli where you can find things you won’t find elsewhere. I always take home some of their cranberries. They have fish, meats and all sorts of things, but you must eat there. You will love it.

The place is adorable. It has a big red awing when you walk in so it is hard to miss. All the tables have white tablecloths and the entire place is ever so clean.

The service is as if you were at home in Russia or Ukraine, even if you have never been there. They want you to be happy, relaxed and comfortable. They will assist you with the menu, which is a great size with lots of offerings.

Their Farm Cheese Pancakes are to die for and they are not easy to get elsewhere and not as good. In Ukraine thick pancakes are traditionally served for breakfast, but I don’t care. They are small puffy pancakes fried from both sides on the pan and are so fluffy, puffy with just a little crisp on both sides. There are different kinds. Some are sweet, salted, with or without filling. Sweet thick pancakes with raspberries or apples are a typical choice. Because of the easy recipe they are typical in Ukraine. Ukrainian thick pancakes are somewhat similar to American pancakes, but they have more porous structure and fewer ingredients. They are just the best.

Pelmeni, Vereniki, and Pierogi are all types of dumplings that are found in either Russia, or Central and Eastern Europe. They are sort of a variation of Chinese dumplings, but the flavor is different and you will love them. Get whatever they have, they are great.

There is not one thing you won’t love on their menu.

This is a happy place. Be happy.

Until now I never wrote a negative review but after tonight’s experience I am beyond disappointed by the blatant discrimination we experienced here. My wife and I came in ready to enjoy a meal and spend money, but the moment the staff heard her Russian accent, the entire service shifted.
Initially, they spoke to us in Russian, but once they realized we didn’t have a Ukrainian accent, they suddenly “didn’t have a table” and made us wait 15 minutes despite many being empty. When we were finally seated, we were ignored for another 15 minutes while they served groups who arrived after us. The staff even looked at us while talking to other tables about us in a mocking way.
It is 2026—this kind of regional racism and “accent-based” gatekeeping has no place in the United States, let alone a restaurant in LA. If you don’t speak the “correct” version of a language to satisfy their politics, they will treat you like an intruder. Unprofessional, exclusionary, and deeply offensive. We will never return.

Ernest was absolutely fantastic! From the moment we sat down at Traktir, he made us feel welcome and taken care of. He was attentive, friendly, and incredibly knowledgeable about the menu — offering great recommendations and making sure everything was perfect throughout our meal. His warm personality and professionalism truly elevated the whole experience. We’ll definitely be back, and we’ll be asking for Ernest again!

I’ve been coming here with my whole family for my entire life (several decades), and the sweet waiter/host always remembers us

We love popping in for some dumplings, herring with dill potatoes (my favorite appetizer), borscht, darnitsky salad, chicken tabaka, and various skewers.

Their infused vodkas are great, and their compote (cold stewed fruit beverage) is amazing and tastes just like my grandma’s.

The atmosphere is relaxed and breezy, and we’ll be coming here forever. I recommend Traktir to all my friends, so definitely come here if you can!

I also love stopping at the deli next door to bring home some yummy salads, premade entrees, and cakes!!

Rating: 2 out of 5. Mostly because of the shady practices to get tips.

The place itself is lovely — cozy atmosphere, friendly and attentive service, tasty food. We were greeted by a warm and caring server, and everything went smoothly… until the bill came.

We were just two people, but an 18% tip was automatically included — without any notice. Maybe that’s normal in LA, but it felt off. What really bothered us was how the check was presented: it was folded in a way that hid the breakdown, showing only a line suggesting another 18%, 20%, or 25% tip.

This setup can easily trick guests into tipping twice — first the automatic gratuity, then another one on top, thinking it hasn’t been included yet. That’s not okay. If they’d asked for a small extra tip — like 2% or 4% — sure, no problem. But charging 18% upfront and then asking for the same again feels dishonest.

Good food and service, but the tipping practice ruined the experience for us. That’s why it’s 2 stars.

It was my first time trying Eastern European food and I was truly impressed—everything we ordered was amazing! The potato dumplings, salad, and fried fish were simple, light, and full of flavor. The service was excellent as well. Highly recommend giving this place a try!

I wasn’t sure what to expect when we decided to dine here. What a wonderful experience. Our service was so kind explaining the food and vodka. The Sturgeon was very tasty. Cooked medium as it can get tough, ours was juicy & flakey. The dumplings were a fun tastey treat. Now the salad was a taste bud explosion! Full of fresh herbs & the garlic dressing was delicious. The vodka tasting was fun. This is a must visit place! BTW there is a nice little market next door where you can pick up some Ukrainian/Russian treats. Parking was easy with a lot attached with plenty of spots.
