But…I had no idea where Bubbala’s Neighborhood Eatery is, so I asked Sally, and she said “It’s in San Anselmo…you can’t miss it”
Well, I found Bubbala’s right off the bat, but the second I saw house made Pastrami Reuben Sandos on the menu ..I got as excited as a kid in a candy store! And…Let me tell you something, that Pastrami was Amazing! 5 stars and worthy of a two hour drive! ☆☆☆☆☆
The coffee drinks are consistently amazing, and I will say the older staff members are truly lovely, warm, and welcoming. Unfortunately, there’s a younger guy who works there who seems genuinely miserable to be there, and it shows. He never acknowledges you, doesn’t respond when you say thank you, and even when you tip well he seems annoyed that customers are there at all. We’ve all worked customer service. A smile and basic kindness go a long way, especially in a neighborhood deli. That kind of energy can really scare people away.
Food-wise, I was especially disappointed this last visit. I ordered a Reuben to go and was excited for it, only to get home and realize there was no sauerkraut on it. The side of potato salad I was really looking forward to was incredibly bland. It desperately needed salt and pepper, if not a little vinegar. It just had no flavor.
I keep coming back hoping it’ll click, because I want to support a local Jewish deli, but aside from the coffee, the food has been mediocre overall. I truly hope they tighten things up because this place has so much potential, and great service plus flavorful food would make all the difference.
The people preparing the food at lunch time did not appear to be familiar with the Eastern European style of cooking. It would be a step forward if this restaurant could hire at least one cook who has worked in a real Jewish deli.
I must also say that I expressed my disappointment to the proprietress who immediately apologized and offered to refund my money.
I will return and give them a second chance. My burning desire for true deli food compels me to hope against hope.
